Villarreal vs Granada Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Villarreal’s winless run stretched to 6 matches in all competitions after a 2-0 loss against relegation threatened Valencia. Despite having more possession and more shots on target, Villarreal lost the game courtesy of first-half goals from Carlos Soler and Santi Mina. Granada, with only one win all season, suffered a 3-1 loss against Espanyol last weekend. Jose Antonio Reyes opened the scoring after just 11 minutes, but Granada were able to come back through a 23rd minute goal from Andreas Pereira. However, goals from Pablo Piatti and Marc Navarro secured three points for the home team.

Villarreal Preview

Villarreal are in danger of conceding defeat in the chase for a Champions League qualification spot after falling four points behind Atletico Madrid. Fran Escriba’s team are winless in their last three league outings. Home form was a major factor in Villarreal’s early season push for the top four places, but the team has just one win in the last four home matches. Adding to the misery is the continued struggle to get points on the road, as Villarreal have managed only two away wins. Failure to win against teams in the bottom half of the table has been their Achilles heel of late.

Granada Preview

Granada continue their search for only the second league win of the season, but this search is threatening to cut the team off from safety even though it is still only the end of January. The club are already eight points behind Leganes in the 17th place. The appointment of Lucas Alcaraz midway through the season does not seem to have had the desired effect with the 50-year-old only managing a solitary win against Sevilla. This victory came at the Nuevo Los Carmenes, but the biggest damages have been caused by their struggles on the road.

Villarreal Team News

Roberto Soldado (cruciate ligament), Denis Cheryshev (muscle), and Mateo Musacchio (broken wrist) are unavailable due to injury. Cedric Bakambu is still involved with DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations. Jaume Costa is suspended for the game.

Granada Team News

Andreas Pereira and Uche Agbo are suspended for the match. Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Victorien Angban are away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. Matthieu Saunier (wound) and Jeremie Boga (muscle) are the absentees due to injury.

Betting Tips and Predictions

There is a substantial difference between Granada’s defensive record at home (average of 1.2 goals conceded per game) and on the road (average of 3.1 goals conceded per game). With only one win all season long, I do not see Granada getting anything out of this game. I would back Villarreal for a win.

Granada have conceded 3.1 goals on an average in the away games. Villarreal, meanwhile, have failed to score in two of the last five league games at the El Madrigal. However, only one game in the last six meetings between these teams have witnessed over 2.5 goals. I see backing under 2.5 goals as a good value.

Villarreal to win – 1/3

Total goals under 2.5 – 17/20
