Villarreal vs Valencia Match Preview
Villarreal come into the game in the sixth place after a goalless draw against Deportivo La Coruna. After having looked like proper challenger for the European spots, Villarreal are in danger of dropping outside the top six following this disappointing result. Valencia, meanwhile, gave their survival hopes a huge boost with a 2-1 win over Espanyol. Martin Montoya’s 17th minute goal provided an early advantage before Santi Mina eased the nerves in the second half. Mina’s goal proved decisive as Espanyol secured a late goal through David Lopez.
Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.
Villarreal are unbeaten in the last five league matches, but they are yet to hit top form after losing three games – against Eibar, Athletic Bilbao, and Deportivo Alaves – in quick succession during November. Manager Fran Escriba appears to have put more stress on defending well rather than scoring plenty of goals. The defence appears back to its best with only two goals conceded in the last five as against six in the previous five. Villarreal have the best defensive record in La Liga with only 12 goals conceded.
Valencia are probably best equipped to get away from the relegation zone, as they are amongst the best scorers in the bottom half of the table. The last five league matches for the club have been roller-coaster rides with games witnessing more than 2.5 goals rather easily. Yet, new boss Voro claimed his first win against Espanyol, a result which will provide the team with the immense confidence. This was Valencia’s first league win since October, and they have moved four points clear off the relegation zone with a game in hand.
Villarreal Team News
Roberto Soldado (cruciate ligament) and Mateo Musacchio (broken wrist) are the long term injury absentees. Players doubtful for the game are Roberto Soriano and Denis Cheryshev, while Cedric Bakambu is taking part at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Valencia Team News
Rodrigo (broken ankle) is the major injury absence for Valencia. Aderlan Santos and Salva Ruiz are doubtful for the game, while Aymen Abdennour is at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Betting Tips and Predictions
Despite an impressive win over Espanyol, Valencia may struggle to get a result at the El Madrigal considering their extremely poor record at this ground, a place where they have just one win since 2007. Home form has been a major positive for Villarreal with the team suffering just one defeat at the El Madrigal. Valencia’s form on the road has been not great with both their away wins coming against strugglers Sporting Gijon and Leganes, and their last away win was in October. I would back Villarreal to get a home win.
Recent meetings between the two teams have been extremely tight. While Valencia have let in at least two goals in their last four away matches, Villarreal are extremely stringent and have the best defensive record in the La Liga. For this reason, I would expect under 2.5 goals in the game.
