Deportivo La Coruna vs Villarreal Match Prediction

By Charlotte Louise Bushell

Deportivo La Coruna are still winless run on the road this season after a 1-1 draw with Espanyol. Celso Borges’ headed goal in the 59th minute seemed to have given the away team a huge advantage, but they were unable to hold on for much longer with Espanyol equalising four minutes later through Gerard Moreno. Villarreal, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run in the league to four matches after a spectacular 1-1 draw with Barcelona. The Yellow Submarines were undone by a late Lionel Messi free-kick after Nicola Sansone’s 49th-minute goal.

Deportivo La Coruna Preview

Deportivo La Coruna managed just one league win during a three-month period from September to November. In recent weeks, though, their form has substantially improved with two wins and a draw lifting them five points above the drop zone. The form table makes for an even better reading when results from all competitions are concerned. Deportivo La Coruna have suffered just one loss – a narrow 3-2 loss against Real Madrid – since the start of December. Keeping a clean sheet continues to be their biggest problem with only one shutout since October.

Villarreal Preview

Villarreal’s push for a top four place this season has been built upon their impressive results against their main competitors. The Yellow Submarines are yet to lose against a team from the top four this season. Home form has been their biggest strength with only one defeat at the El Madrigal. On the road, however, their 3-1 success over Sporting Gijon before the international break was their first away win since September. Villarreal’s biggest strength this season has been their ability to exploit the channels with runners like Alexandre Pato and Nicola Sansone. The latter has seven goals and three assists in 17 appearances.

Deportivo La Coruna Team News

Bruno Vilela Gama (groin) and Carles Gil (sprained knee) are absent due to injury. Faycal Fajr is away at the African Cup of Nations, while Juanfran is suspended for the game.

Villarreal Team News

Cedric Bakambu and Denis Cheryshev are doubtful. Mateo Pablo Musacchio (broken wrist) and Roberto Soldado (cruciate ligament) are unavailable due to injury, while top scorer Nicola Sansone and Jaume Costa are suspended.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The meeting between these two teams has traditionally been a low scoring game with 17 out of the last 21 meetings witnessing less than 2.5 goals. Even though Deportivo have managed to score more than twice in four out of the last five league matches at the Riazor, they are expected to be held back by an in-form Villarreal’s defence. I would back a total of under 2.5 goals.

Deportivo La Coruna may be struggling near the relegation zone, but they have suffered just one loss in all competitions since December. The absence of top scorer Sansone would be a major blow for Villarreal. This combined with Villarreal’s failure to score in three out of the last five away league matches might just be enough to see Deportivo get a slender win.

Deportivo La Coruna win – 7/4

Total goals under 2.5 goals – 3/5
