Real Sociedad vs Sevilla Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Real Sociedad welcome Sevilla to the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta on 07/01/17 in a meeting between two sides in contention for European places this term. Both teams rounded off 2016 with victories, Real Sociedad beating Granada with a comfortable 2-0 win away from home. Sevilla too enjoyed a comfortable victory, overcoming Malaga with a 4-1 win on home turf to keep pace with leaders Real Madrid and Barcelona. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Sociedad Preview

Real Sociedad did what was expected of them in their last league outing, beating second-bottom Granada 2-0 on the road to leave them level with fourth-placed Villarreal in the league table. Jon Bautista opened the scoring ten minutes after the restart after good work from midfielder Esteban Granero, before striker Juanmi completed the win twenty minutes from time. Winning six, drawing one and losing one of their previous eight La Liga outings, Sociedad have been in terrific form as of late and will hope to take that into the New Year with them as they look to earn a Champions League place. Sociedad last finished in the top four in 2012/13, although failed to get out of the group stages of the Champions League the following season. Sociedad have been outstanding at home this season, with only Real Madrid beating them on home turf, that result coming on the opening day of the campaign. Since then, Sociedad have won five and drawn two of their seven games at home, beating the likes of Atletico Madrid, as well as holding Barcelona to a 1-1 draw. A win here could be huge for their season, as they look to earn qualification for a European place come the end of the campaign.

Sociedad to win either half 4/6

Sevilla Preview

Sevilla’s recent form will see them come into this fixture full of confidence, winning four of their last five La Liga matches. Most recently, they breezed past Malaga 4-1 at home, after a tremendous ten-minute first-half blitz, ultimately winning the game during a scintillating period of play. Luciano Vietto struck twice in three minutes to give Sevilla the lead, before Wissam Ben Yedder and Vitolo both struck within in a minute of each other to give Jorge Sampaoli’s men a 4-0 lead after just thirty-five minutes. The only sour note came in the second half when Adil Rami was sent off, which then saw Sandro Ramirez pull back a consolation strike for the visitors. As previously mentioned, Sevilla were in terrific form prior to the winter break, with the shock 2-1 defeat to Granada the only blip on an otherwise great run. Amazingly, Sampaoli has now got this team picking up points away from home, having failed to win a single away game in La Liga last season. Now winning three and losing just once in their last five on the road, it is the main factor behind their marked improvement this term, currently sitting only four points behind Real Madrid, who have a game in hand on all their fellow rivals.

Sociedad Team News

Carlos Martinez (cruciate ligament) is ruled out for Sociedad, with Esteban Granero (thigh) and Markel Bergara (ankle) also carrying knocks. Forwards Carlos Vela (hip) and Imanol Agirretxe (ankle) are expected to be fit.

Sevilla Team News

Adil Rami misses out for Sevilla after his red card last time out. Card Fernandez Luna (cruciate ligament) isn’t yet fit to return, although Benoit Tremoulinas and Michael Krohn-Dehli could recover from their respective knee injuries to return.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is set to be an extremely tight contest between two sides who will now be holding similar aspirations towards the top of the La Liga table. Although Sevilla have been much better on the road this term, Sociedad’s recent home form has been outstanding and has seen them go unbeaten against Atletico and Barcelona. Adil Rami is set to be a significant miss for the away side, so I’m giving the home side the edge here.
