Sporting Gijon vs Villarreal Match Prediction
This will be a match between two teams with contrasting fortunes. Sporting Gijon have suffered four defeats in the last five games while Villarreal are unbeaten in the last four matches. Fresh from a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid, Villarreal will be in a buoyant mood while making the trip to the El Molinón. A late goal from Roberto Soriano was the icing on the cake against Atletico after Trigueros and Jonathan dos Santos had scored in the space of 10 minutes. Sporting Gijon suffered a narrow 2-1 loss against Espanyol with the late goal from Duje Čop only being a consolation. Here we have our full match preview with all the very best predictions, betting tips and match stats.
Sporting Gijon Preview
Sporting Gijon were unable to build on the 3-1 win over Osasuna on December 4, as they lost to Espanyol last weekend. The club had to wait a long time – almost 3 months – in order to get their third league win of the season. The loss against Espanyol is a major dent to the confidence. However, returning to the home comfort will offer them some hope of getting a positive result against Villarreal with all three league wins coming at the El Molinón.
Villarreal jumped into fourth spot after a majestic 4-0 win over the 2013-14 champions, Atletico Madrid. The victory helped end a run of three league matches without a win. The El Madrigal has been a fortress this season, but Villarreal have taken just seven points out of a possible 21 on the road. This poor form has largely been down to their inability to score goals; Villarreal have scored 12 goals in the last five home matches compared to just two in the last five away games. The only consolation is that Villarreal are unbeaten in the last four games across all competitions.
Sporting Gijon Team News
Alberto Ramos Lora is back in training after recovering from a groin injury. Lillo Castellano (knee), Dani Ndi (hamstring), and Carlos Castro (ankle) could be unavailable for the game.
Villarreal Team News
Mateo Pablo Musacchio (hamstring) and Roberto Soldado (cruciate ligament) are the long term injury absentees. Bojan Jokic (toe), Denis Cheryshev (leg), Samuel Castillejo (hamstring) could be the other casualties.
Betting Tips and Predictions
If Sporting Gijon are going to win any game at the moment, it is likely to be at home. Home comforts have so far provided their three wins this season, but Abelardo Fernandez’ team cannot be backed on Saturday on this factor alone.
Villarreal have been extremely poor on the road this season. Despite being rather poor on their travels, the team has had four draws. Even if they fail to beat Sporting Gijon, there is a good probability of the team coming away with a fourth draw in six games.
Scoring on the road has been a big problem for Villarreal, and I would recommend considering a small stake on backing the away team to score under 1.5 goals. A draw seems a likely result with the contrasting status of the both teams. My top betting tip would be to back a low scoring draw, which should not be the end of the world for both teams.
Draw and less than 2.5 goals – 15/4
