Cardiff City vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Phill Barrs

This live Sky Sports Friday evening (19:45) game features two sides with nothing to play for in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Newcastle have the stronger head-to-head record between the sides with five victories from their last seven meetings. This includes a victory in the reverse fixture back in November thanks to a goal each from Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran with Cardiff getting a late consolation from Peter Whittingham.

It was a 0-0 draw for Cardiff last time out at the DW Stadium with Wigan in a game low on chances and low on quality.

The Magpies secured promotion to the Premier League last time in emphatic fashion on Monday as they defeated Preston 4-1. Ayoze Perez netted twice on that occasion while Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie (penalty) also got among the goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I would not be rushing to get involved in the match betting market here seeing as neither side has anything to play for with Cardiff safe in mid-table and Newcastle having secured promotion.

I think the best bets in this tricky looking game are a couple of plays in the first goalscorer market. Firstly, I like the look of Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden who registered three shots in the last game and although none hit the target it was the fact he was getting into positions is what impressed me most. Secondly, after coming off the bench in their last game I have a feeling Rickie Lambert will start as Neil Warnock will want to assess what he has in the former Liverpool and Southampton front man. If selected and fit Lambert will be desperate to prove he still has it in him to the watching manager and to the wider audience watching on TV.

Isaac Hayden first goalscorer, each-way unlimited places

Rickie Lambert anytime goalscorer.

Cardiff Preview

The last six Cardiff results show just exactly why they sit in mid-table with two wins, two draws and two defeats. Not since the 14th and then again the 18th February have they produced the same result in back-to-back games when they went on a three game winning run.

In front of their own fans, the Welsh side are on a good run of form with no defeat in six and victory from each of their last three. This is their final home game of the season and they currently have the 15th best home rank in the division.

Their last three matches have produced a total of just three goals though at home four of their last six have gone over 2.5 goals. In four of their last five in front of their own fans both teams have found the back of the net. In none of their last five have the Bluebirds found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of the tie.

Newcastle Preview

Newcastle put to an end a run of three without victory with a comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Preston last time out.  The result secured a quick return to the Premier League after just one season in the division.

On the road, it is four without success for the Magpies with the last two ending in defeat. This is the final away games for the North Eastern side who are the best road rated side in the division.

Five of their last six games have seen both teams find the back of the net and each of their last four. Four of their last six have gone over 2.5 goals while this is five of seven when just looking at road games. They have the best away-ranked defence in the Championship this season.

Cardiff Team News

Cardiff have injury doubts over Sol Bamba (groin) while Rhys Healey (cruciate) will miss a few months.

Newcastle Team News

Dwight Gayle (hamstring) is back in training, Rolando Aarons (broken toe) is out for the season. Jamie Sterry and Curtis Good (both groin) are unlikely to play any part in the remainder of the season.
