Betting Tips and Predictions
Chelsea’s win over Spurs at the weekend should leave them feeling supremely confident heading into this contest, against a Southampton side who have struggled against the league’s bigger sides in recent weeks. I’m expecting to see a home win and for Chelsea to open the gap between themselves and Tottenham back to seven points.
Chelsea overcame Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon as Antonio Conte guided his team to the final of the FA Cup. Surprise inclusion Willian opened the scoring with an excellent free-kick, but Harry Kane’s header pulled Spurs level. Willian struck again, this time from the penalty spot just before the break as Chelsea went in at half-time 2-1 up. Dele Alli cancelled out that lead when he finished an unbelievable cross from Christian Eriksen, however, two goals in five minutes saw Chelsea book their place in the final. Eden Hazard found the bottom corner of Hugo Lloris’ net before Nemanja Matic’s thunderous strike crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. Conte made a big call in leaving both Hazard and Diego Costa, but the Italian was ultimately vindicated in his decision with the former swinging the momentum in favour of the Blues after his introduction. They have become masters of soaking up pressure and hitting teams on the counter with a sucker punch this season, and for all of Spurs’ control in the game, at no point did Chelsea trail in the game. Now returning to Premier League action, they have the chance to put the gap between themselves and Spurs back to seven points, as Mauricio Pochettino takes his side to Crystal Palace the following evening. With eleven wins from their last twelve Premier League games, Chelsea’s form at Stamford Bridge has been key to their rise to the top this season.
Southampton will be looking to bounce back from a convincing defeat last time out, after going down 3-0 at home to Manchester City ten days ago. Vincent Kompany scored his first goal since August 2015 to give City the lead, rising highest in the area to mark a real poignant moment for the Belgian skipper. City sealed the victory with two goals in three minutes, both of which were created by Kevin de Bruyne. The midfielder played a square ball for Leroy Sane comfortably slot the ball past Fraser Forster before his cross was headed home by Sergio Aguero at the far post. Claude Puel’s team never really offered much of an attacking threat, lacking a clear gameplan and method of how they were going to break City down. They have performed relatively well since losing in the League Cup final against Manchester United, winning three, drawing one and losing two of their six fixtures since, with the two defeats coming against Spurs and Man City. With three wins in their last four away games, the Saints have performed well in recent weeks on the road, scoring four in two of those four victories away from St. Mary’s. Currently 9th in the table, the Saints are currently on for another top-half finish and also have a trip to Wembley and European run to show for their campaign.
Chelsea Team News
Gary Cahill remains doubtful for Chelsea, so Nathan Ake should keep his place in the back three. Both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa started on the bench at Wembley and each are set to return to the side here.
Southampton Team News
Virgil van Dijk has returned to light training following an ankle problem but this game should come too soon for the Dutchman. Matt Targett (knee) is ruled out, although Charlie Austin (shoulder) is in contention for a return.
