Leicester City vs Chelsea Match Prediction
Leicester City host Chelsea at the King Power Stadium on 14/01/17 as the reigning Premier League champions face the current league leaders. Leicester will be full of confidence after progressing through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Everton 2-1 away from home. Chelsea enjoyed a safe passage in the same competition, cruising to a 4-1 victory over League One Peterborough United. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.
Leicester came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Everton in their all-Premier League FA Cup tie to progress through to the fourth round of the competition. The Foxes fell behind shortly after the hour mark after excellent work from Gerard Deulofeu teed up Romelu Lukaku to put the home side in front. However, Leicester’s response was swift, with Ahmed Musa replying with a brace inside of eight minutes of Lukaku’s opener to help seal his side’s place in the next round of the competition. Leicester’s only defeat in their last five matches in all competitions came against the Toffees, with revenge proving to be sweet in the form of an FA Cup defeat. That said, concentration needs to quickly return back to league matters, with Leicester currently sitting only six points above the relegation zone in 15th place coming into this fixture. Last season, Claudio Ranieri’s men beat Chelsea 2-1 in this fixture, in what proved to be the final game of Jose Mourinho’s second spell at Stamford Bridge. The victory over the Blues last term proved to be one of the key results of their season, although one of the stars from that night, Riyad Mahrez, won’t be available.
Chelsea breezed into the fourth round of the FA Cup last time out, defeating Peterborough United of two divisions beneath them 4-1 at Stamford Bridge. The scoring was opened by Spanish winger Pedro, before Michy Batshuayi doubled the advantage shortly before the break. Willian then made it three, after which John Terry saw red after bringing down forward Lee Angol who would’ve been through on goal. Tom Nichols restored some pride by making it 3-1 but Pedro scored again to regain Chelsea’s three-goal advantage. In the Premier League, Chelsea have now been handed the unfamiliar task of responding to a defeat, after their thirteen-match winning streak was brought to an end at the hands of London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The last time they were on the losing side - the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal - the aforementioned run ensued, with the team also keeping clean sheets in each of their next six Premier League games. Antonio Conte will be eager to see a similar sort of streak ensue, as they look to put the pressure on their rivals by pulling away from the chasing pack with another win. In the January window, Nathan Ake has recently been recalled from his successful loan spell at Bournemouth, while Fernando Llorente’s name is continuosly linked with a move to the Bridge.
Leicester Team News
Daniel Amartey, Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani are all away at the Africa Cup of Nations and are unavailable for the home side. Leonardo Ulloa (thigh) is a doubt, while Andy King and Jamie Vardy are both suffering with fevers.
Chelsea Team News
John Terry is set to miss out this clash after his red card in the FA Cup. Marcos Alonso (leg) and David Luiz (knee) are both carrying knocks and will be assessed beforehand. Diego Costa is set to return to the starting XI after Michy Batshuayi’s run out last time out.
Betting Tips and Predictions
Chelsea have shown fantastic mental strength this season and were unfortunate to see their pursuit of the all-time Premier League consecutive victories fall short at the final hurdle. Leicester did well to beat Everton in the FA Cup but I’m not expecting them to have enough to beat Chelsea this time around.
