Watford vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Watford host Manchester City at Vicarage Road on 21/05/17 as the away side look to cement their place in the Champions League. Watford will be looking to end the season on somewhat of a positive after losing 4-3 away to Chelsea last time out. City meanwhile beat West Brom 3-1 in midweek to leave them in touching distance of the Champions League. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Watford have been on the beach for several weeks now, with Walter Mazzarri’s job security looking particularly precarious heading into next season. This has been a hugely disappointing season for City, who will see Champions League qualification as the bare minimum expectation and I’m expecting them to comfortably secure it at Vicarage Road.

Watford Preview

Watford’s wait for a victory continued at Stamford Bridge last time out, losing 4-3 away to Chelsea in a game where the scoring began during two minutes of madness for John Terry. The Chelsea captain poked his team in front, before moments later setting up Etienne Capoue for the equaliser with a misjudged header. Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi then each scored either side of half-time respectively to put Chelsea in a commanding position, although Daryl Janmaat brought Watford back into contention. Stefano Okaka seemed to have won Watford a point when he netted the equaliser, but Cesc Fabregas struck with two minutes remaining to win the game for Chelsea. It’s been a sombre ending to the season for Watford, who have won just one of their last seven matches, losing all of the other six and come into this one off the back of a five-match losing streak. The Chelsea result was somewhat of an anomaly in that the Hornets managed to score three goals; something they last did back in March, which was also during a 4-3 loss. This may well prove to be Walter Mazzarri’s final game in charge at Vicarage Road given the previous managerial stints which have gone before him under the Pozzo family, with the team still in with a chance of finishing 17th should they lose this weekend.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul (hamstring), Roberto Pereyra (knee) and Mauro Zarate (cruciate ligament) are all ruled out for Watford. Sebastien Prodl is suspended, while Miguel Britos (Calf), Craig Cathcart (knee) and Christian Kabasele (thigh) are doubts.

Manchester City Preview

Manchester City all but ensured their place in the Champions League next season following a comfortable 3-1 win at home to West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday evening. Two goals in two first half minutes from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne - both of whom claimed the assist on the other’s goal - sent City on their way inside the first half an hour. Yaya Toure produced a throwback moment as he drove through the West Brom defence after exchanging passes with Sergio Aguero before finding the back of the net in style. Hal Robson-Kanu netted a consolation for the Baggies in injury time as City ran away comfortable victors at the Etihad. Even if City were to lose at Watford this weekend, only a dramatic five-goal swing would see them drop out of the top four, with that potential scenario needing Liverpool to beat Middlesbrough and for Arsenal to beat Everton by at least four goals. After taking maximum points from three crucial home games, Pep Guardiola appears to have done enough to see his side into the Champions League but is well aware of what a disappointing campaign it has been on the whole for his team. A significant rebuild is expected to take place in the summer with the expectation of City turning into instant title challengers off the back of it.

Manchester City Team News

Claudio Bravo (calf), Fabian Delph (leg) and Ilkay Gundogan (cruciate ligament) are all unavailable for City on the final day. Pep Guardiola is likely to stick with the same side which beat West Brom midweek, meaning both Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero will line up in attack.
