Southampton vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton host Stoke City at St. Mary’s Stadium on 21/05/17 as two mid-table sides look to finish the season with as high a league position as possible. Southampton failed to entertain once again on Wednesday night as they took part in a 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United. Stoke meanwhile lost 4-1 away to Arsenal as their disappointing end to the season continued at the Bet365 Stadium. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Neither team has had a particularly enjoyable end to the season and will consider this to have been an underwhelming season, with big decisions to be made in the summer. I’m expecting home advantage to inspire Southampton to victory here after going on a run of scoring in just one of their last six home games.

Southampton Preview

Frustration towards Claude Puel’s lack of positive football at Southampton were exaggerated further at St. Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night after the home supporters saw their team fail to get on the scoresheet once again. With United playing a rotated side once again, incentive was present for Southampton to win back-to-back games for just the third time this calendar year, and they were gifted the best chance of the game to do so when Eric Bailly handled just outside the area but the referee gifted them with a penalty. Manolo Gabbiadini stepped up to take it but saw his effort saved by Sergio Romero, as the Saints’ troubles from the spot continued, with this being their third penalty miss from five games. Those misses have ultimately cost them four points, and the home Southampton supporters have now seen their side fail to score at home in five of their last six games at St. Mary’s. It seems strange that an 8th-placed finish and trip to the League Cup final - alongside a run in Europe - has seen Puel’s future come under scrutiny, but their lack of effectiveness in the final third has seen patience run thin. Puel is set for an end of season review with the club’s board in the next week or so and will hope his side can put on a free-flowing display to aid his case to stay on.

Southampton Team News

Virgil van Dijk and Shane Long are both set to miss out for Saints with respective ankle problems. Charlie Austin (shoulder) will hope to feature after missing the second half of the season through injury.

Stoke City Preview

The disappointment of Stoke’s season was encapsulated by their final home match of the season, as the Potters fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Arsenal last time out. They fell behind on the stroke of half-time as Olivier Giroud converted from Hector Bellerin’s ball from close range, with Mesut Ozil making it 2-0 after he finished from Alexis Sanchez’s eye-of-the-needle through ball. Peter Crouch did bring the home side back into contention in controversial style, as the striker nudged the ball home with the aid of his hand. However, Sanchez and Giroud scored twice in four minutes for the Gunners, who romped to a convincing win at a ground they have historically struggled at in recent years. Currently 14th heading into this weekend, the Potters are set to end the season with their lowest league finish under Mark Hughes following three consecutive ninth-placed finishes. That has been aided by an end-of-season run of just one win from their final ten games, that coming in a 3-1 win at home to a Hull side who have the worst away record in the Premier League this term. Depending on their own result and results elsewhere, Stoke could finish the season as high as 11th or as low as 16th.

Stoke City Team News

Stephen Ireland and Ibrahim Afellay are both set to miss out for Stoke through a broken leg and knee problem respectively. Peter Crouch will hope to start in what may prove to be his final game in a Stoke shirt.
