Chelsea vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea host Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on 21/05/17 in what is set to be a day of celebration for the Premier League champions. Chelsea were involved in a seven-goal thriller last time out as they eventually overcame Watford 4-3 on Monday night. Sunderland, on the other hand, battled bravely but ultimately fell short as they lost 2-0 away to Arsenal. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Chelsea, regardless of what sort of team they field against Sunderland at the weekend, will be fully expecting to round the season off with a win as they look to do a league and cup double against Arsenal next weekend. Sunderland will be happy to see this season draw to a close but I’m expecting them to have to endure one final defeat before it arrives this Sunday.

Chelsea Preview

John Terry’s penultimate home game at Stamford Bridge won’t be one he forgets in a hurry after being involved in two minutes of madness at both ends of the pitch. The Chelsea captain poked his team in front, before moments later setting up Etienne Capoue for the equaliser with a misjudged header. Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi then each scored either side of half-time respectively to put Chelsea in a commanding position, although Daryl Janmaat brought Watford back into contention. Stefano Okaka seemed to have won Watford a point when he netted the equaliser, but Cesc Fabregas struck with two minutes remaining to win a thriller for Chelsea 4-3. With the title wrapped up at West Brom on Friday, the main focus for Antonio Conte will be to ensure his side keep their winning momentum going heading into the FA Cup final next Saturday evening. With six wins on the bounce in all competitions heading into this fixture, this appears to be the perfect opportunity to make it seven as they face the already-relegated, 20th-placed side in the Premier League. It is set to be an emotional afternoon for Terry, for whom this will be his final game at Stamford Bridge in a Chelsea shirt as he says goodbye with a fifth Premier League winners medal to add to his collection.

Chelsea Team News

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is Chelsea’s only injury doubt with a back problem. John Terry is set to lead Chelsea out at Stamford Bridge for the final time this weekend before leaving the club in the summer.

Sunderland Preview

Just as was the case against Hull City a week or so ago, Sunderland appeared to be in the mood to spoil a season as they produced a surprisingly resilient performance away to Arsenal last time out, before eventually losing 2-0 at the Emirates. Potentially riled by Arsene Wenger’s ‘on the beach’ comments, the Black Cats look determined to frustrate the hosts and did so for 72 minutes, before Granit Xhaka found Mesut Ozil, who in turn squared his cushioned pass for Alexis Sanchez to tap in the opener. Sanchez then netted Arsenal’s second, scoring the rebound after Jordan Pickford was only able to parry Olivier Giroud’s terrific improvised effort as defeat ensured they would finish bottom of the table. Sunderland supporters will have been begging for this season to finish for weeks on end and they are now close to being put out of their misery as they prepare for what they hope will be a short stay in the Championship, similar to their local rivals Newcastle. Picking up just ten points away from home all season - the fourth poorest record in the division - it seems unlikely they will be able to put any stain on Chelsea’s party, despite having a degree of success at Stamford Bridge in recent history.

Sunderland Team News

Jan Kirchhoff, Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore are all long-term absentees through knee injuries. Jason Denayer (thigh), George Honeyman (back) and Victor Anichebe (hamstring) are all unlikely to be risked.
