PSV Eindhoven vs Excelsior Match Prediction
PSV Eindhoven will be aiming to close the gap at the top of the Eredivisie table when they welcome Excelsior at the Philips Stadion on Saturday night. PSV Eindhoven managed to hold Ajax to a 1-1 away draw last time out in the Eredivisie thanks to a late equaliser from Siem De Jong. Excelsior also registered a 2-2 home draw against NEC Nijmegen, with Stanley Elbers and Khalid Karami scoring the goals for Mitchell van der Gaag’s side. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.
PSV Eindhoven Preview
PSV Eindhoven finished 2016 on a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, but three of these games have ended in draws. They were thrashed 4-1 on the road at Borussia Dortmund in a friendly fixture last weekend but bounced back with a 2-1 home win over Freiburg. PSV haven’t been at their best throughout this Eredivisie campaign, but they still find themselves in a comfortable 3rd position in the standings with just 3 points off the second-placed Ajax. PSV’s secret for their good performances this season has been their solid defence, as they have the best defensive record in the division with just 8 goals conceded in 17 league fixtures. PSV’s recent home form has been decent, as they have won three and drawn two of their last five home fixtures across all competitions. Furthermore, PSV Eindhoven are unbeaten in their last seven home meetings with Excelsior, scoring at least two goals in six of these. The main reason for PSV’s struggle throughout this Eredivisie campaign has been their inefficient attack, as the Dutch giants hold the worst offensive record in the top seven. Gaston Pereiro has been PSV’s most prolific player in front of goal so far this season, helping the team with 6 goals and 2 assists in his 16 league appearances.
On the contrary, Excelsior have struggled for consistency in the first part of the season, but they still find themselves in the safety zone at the moment. Excelsior currently stand in 15th place in the Eredivisie table with 16 points after 17 rounds, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Excelsior looked a little bit better towards the end of 2016, losing just once in five league fixtures. Mitchell van der Gaag’s side come into this tie on a high following a 1-3 away win at Ajax in a friendly fixture at the weekend. The good news is that Excelsior looked incredibly strong going forward over the past two months, scoring at least two goals in each of their last six games across all competitions. Keeping the ball out of the net has been Excelsior’s biggest problem throughout this Eredivisie campaign as they have one of the leakiest defences in the division, conceding 32 goals in 17 league fixtures. Their away form has also been an issue, as Excelsior have only won once in their last nine away fixtures in all competitions while losing six in the process. Stanley Elbers and Hicham Faik are Excelsior’s most in-form players, as the pair bagged 9 goals between them.
PSV Eindhoven Team News
Ramon Pascal Lundqvist, Luciano Narsingh and Siem de Jong are all doubts, but Nikolai Laursen is still out through a cruciate ligament injury. The good news is that Jurgen Locadia is back in training following his groin injury.
Excelsior Team News
Mike van Duinen and Soares Bordignon Arghus are both out through injury, while Danilo Pantic and Carlo De Reuver are both doubts.
Betting Predictions and Tips
PSV Eindhoven should have no problems to pick up all three points in this one, as they have been a strong side at the Philips Stadium, while Excelsior have only won once in their last nine away games in all competitions. Furthermore, PSV have won six and drawn once in their last seven home meetings with Excelsior in the Eredivisie, scoring at least two goals in six of these.
