Montpellier vs Saint-Etienne Match Prediction
Montpellier and Saint-Etienne will square off at the Stade de la Mosson on Sunday afternoon, with both teams looking to build on their recent victories in Ligue 1. Montpellier picked up a comfortable 0-3 win on the road at Nancy last weekend thanks to a brace from Isaac Mbenza and an excellent strike from Steve Mounie. Saint-Etienne also registered a comfortable 4-0 victory against Lorient last time out, with Loic Perrin, Jordan Veretout, Romain Hamouma and Jorge Intima all getting on the scoresheet for Christophe Galtier’s side. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.
Montpellier have found some consistency of late, having won two of their last three games in Ligue 1. They picked up a 2-1 home win over SC Bastia at the beginning of February, but then they succumbed to a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of the current leaders Monaco. However, Montpellier looked incredibly strong going forward last weekend against Nancy, registering a 0-3 away victory. This lifts Montpellier to 11th spot in the league table tied on 29 points with the 12th-placed Nantes, four points clear of the drop zone. Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for Montpellier so far this season, but their defensive line has been terrible in this term. They have conceded 42 goals in 25 league fixtures, which is one of the leakiest defences in the division. Actually, Montpellier allowed 20 goals in their last ten games across all competitions. The good news is that Montpellier have been much better on home soil throughout this Ligue 1 campaign, having lost just two of their twelve home league fixtures. Montpellier were on a seven-game unbeaten streak in Ligue 1 prior to their 1-2 defeat at Monaco in their most recent home league fixture. Steve Mounie and Ryad Boudebouz have both enjoyed a decent Ligue 1 campaign, as the pair bagged 17 goals and eight assists between them.
Saint-Etienne, on the flip side, have also struggled for fluency over the past three weeks, winning three and losing three of their last six games across all competitions. Last weekend, les Verts managed a comfortable 4-0 home win over Lorient in Ligue 1, but they succumbed to a heavy 3-0 defeat on the road at Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie in midweek. Saint-Etienne have enjoyed a strong Ligue 1 campaign so far this season, as they currently stand in 5th spot in the standings, just one point off 4th-placed Lyon. Saint-Etienne’s main reason for their good performances throughout this Ligue 1 campaign has been their solid defence, as they hold the second best defensive record in the division with just 19 goals conceded in 25 league fixtures. The bad news is that Saint-Etienne haven’t been at their best on the road recently, as they suffered defeats in each of their last three away games across all competitions. The worrying fact is that St. Etienne have failed to score a single goal in their most recent trips. The good news is that Saint-Etienne are undefeated in their last four visits to the Stade de la Mosson, winning three and drawing once in the process.
Montpellier Team News
Morgan Poaty, Geoffrey Jourdren, Souleymane Camara and Joris Steve Marveaux are all doubts, but Nanitamo Jonathan Ikone and Rodrigue Ninga Casimir are both missing through injury. In addition, Mathieu Deplagne is missing through suspension.
Saint-Etienne Team News
Alexander Soderlund, Oussama Tannane and Cheikh M’Bengue are all missing through injury, while Erin Jorge Gomes Pinheiro is a doubt.
Betting Predictions and Tips
Saint-Etienne are the better team in this tie, but Montpellier’s recent home form in Ligue 1 has been near perfect. I’m expecting a close game, but I think that Saint-Etienne should be able to grab a narrow victory. Actually, Saint-Etienne have won the last five meetings with Montpellier in all competitions, conceding just two goals in this term.
