Blackburn Rovers vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Blackburn Rovers take on Manchester United at Ewood Park on 19/02/17 in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Manchester United maintained their assault for a top-four place last time out, beating Watford 2-0 in another comfortable home win for Jose Mourinho’s side. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Blackburn Preview

Blackburn remain slumped in the Championship relegation zone coming into this weekend’s glamour FA Cup tie, after losing 2-1 away to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek. The playoff-contenders took the lead after eighteen minutes as Vincent Sasso opened the scoring off a Barry Bannan delivery. Blackburn managed to pull back two minutes later through a Sam Hutchinson own goal, but Sasso was at it again on the stroke of half-time as he put Wednesday back in front, in what proved to be the decisive goal of the match. Midfielder Hope Akpan saw red in the final five minutes for Rovers to add insult to injury, with that ruling him out of this game through suspension. Blackburn haven’t faced a test close to the magnitude they will come up against here, with QPR and Blackpool the two sides they eliminated in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. At Ewood Park, their form in the league has been patchy of late, winning two, drawing two and losing three of their last seven, although they have managed to find the back of the net in each of those results. Strikers Sam Gallagher and Danny Graham have been Blackburn’s main shining light this season, combining to score twenty-one goals between them, giving their side a realistic chance of escaping danger.

Man United Preview

Manchester United are beginning to look a really formidable force under Jose Mourinho and further strengthened their home record this term. Only Manchester City have come away from Old Trafford with a win under their belts this term, with Mourinho guiding United to just one home defeat in twenty-one matches. Last time out, they were far too strong for Watford, taking the lead after half-an-hour through Juan Mata, before Anthony Martial doubled their lead on the hour mark. Despite this current unbeaten run, United remain sixth in the Premier League table, although the gap between themselves and the top four has now been closed to just two points. With the League Cup final to come - a competition Mourinho has historically taken extremely seriously - United are expected to make changes in both this game and the Europa League game midweek prior to the showpiece event at Wembley to give themselves the best possible chance of winning then. They have enjoyed a comfortable ride in the FA Cup thus far, drawing two Championship sides at home in Reading and Wigan Athletic, coming out 4-0 winners in each.

Blackburn Team News

Adam Henley (hamstring), Elliot Ward (ankle) and Tommie Hoban (shoulder) are all set to miss out for Blackburn. Gordon Greer and Corry Evans will both hope to shake off groin strains in time to feature. Hope Akpan is suspended.

Man United Team News

Phil Jones (foot) is set to miss out on the chance to face his former club in this one. The likes of Sergio Romero, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford could all return to the starting XI here.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester United have dismissed the challenges of Championship opposition with real comfort in this competition so far and I’m expecting that to continue here. They should come out on top here and I can see there being a few goals in this game.
