Zenit St. Petersburg vs Real Sociedad Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Zenit Petersburg and Real Sociedad will be facing each other at the Stadion Krestovskyi on Thursday afternoon, with both sides looking to build on their first-round victories of their Europa League group L. Zenit Petersburg picked up a comfortable 0-5 victory on the road at Vardar last time out in the Europa League thanks to a brace from Aleksandr Kokorin and three other goals from Artem Dzyuba, Branislav Ivanovic and Emiliano Rigoni. On the flip side, Real Sociedad won 4-0 at home over Rosenborg thanks to a brace from Diego Llorente, a first-half goal from David Zurutuza and an own-goal from Jorgen Skjelvik. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Zenit have been a strong home side in Europe over the past few years, having won their last seven Champions League and Europa League group stage fixtures. On the other hand, Real Sociedad have suffered defeats in four of their last five European away games. Zenit have only conceded once in their most recent five home fixtures and I’m backing them to grab all three points in this one.

Zenit St. Petersburg Preview

Zenit Petersburg have been in mixed shape in this early part of the 2017/18 competitive season, registering ten wins, three defeats and four draws in their 17 competitive fixtures. Zenit looked incredibly solid at the back over the past month, as they kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight home fixtures. Zenit finished only third in the Russian Premier League table last season to book their place in the Europa League qualifiers. They beat the likes of Yehuda and FC Utrecht in the third qualifying round and play-offs respectively in order to reach the group stage of the competition. Zenit have featured in either the Champions League or Europa League group stage in every season since 2010/11 and were the UEFA Cup winners in 2008. At home, the Russians have won their last seven Champions League and Europa League group stage fixtures since a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen back in November 2014. Their recent home form has seen them win four and draw one of their last five home games across all competitions, conceding just once in the process. Zenit’s 5-0 triumph at Vardar on their Europa League group opener matched their biggest European away victory. Aleksandr Kokorin is the Russian Premier League’s topscorer with seven goals under his belt, and he has also scored a brace against Vardar last time out.

Zenit St. Petersburg Team News

Victor Fayzulin is Zenit’s only missing player for this clash as he is out through a knee injury.

Real Sociedad Preview

Real Sociedad, on the other hand, started their Europa League group stage campaign with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Rosenborg, but have suffered back-to-back defeats in their most recent three games in La Liga. The Whites and Blues have struggled to keep the ball out of their own net recently, as they have conceded three goals in each of their most recent three competitive games. Despite the recent league defeats, Real Sociedad still sit in 8th spot in the La Liga table tied on nine points with Levante, just two points behind the top six. Regarding their recent Europa League record, this is their group stage debut, but they have featured in the Champions League group stage in 2003/04 and 2013/14. The San Sebastian side have won four of their five Europa League fixtures, keeping a clean sheet in three of these. Away from home, Sociedad have lost four of their last five European away games. The good news is that their recent away form has seen them lose just once in their last six away games across all competitions. They looked solid going forward on the road recently, having scored seven goals in their last three away games. Juanmi is Sociedad’s topscorer in La Liga with three goals under his belt, but Diego Llorente is also a player to watch here after he netted a brace against Rosenborg a fortnight ago.

Real Sociedad Team News

Inigo Martinez, Carlos Martinez and Carlos Vela are all doubts, but Raul Rodriguez Navas is still missing through a back injury.
