Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides at different ends of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Wolves maintained their four-point lead at the top of the division as they won 1-0 away to Birmingham on Monday evening. An eighth-minute Leo Bonatini goal was enough to give them the three points in a game that was low on scoring chances. Sunderland continued their home misery as they failed to build on the victory over Burton by losing 3-1 against Reading. The game turned on a Callum McManaman red card with the Royals netting three after this and a Lewis Grabban penalty proving no consolation for the Black Cats. The last time these sides met was in the 2011/12 Premier League season so it is hard to read too much into the head-to-head record. For what it is worth the Black Country outfit are unbeaten in their last five meetings winning four of these.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Wolves should win this one but it is hard to back them at such short prices so it is finding a way to enhance the price. In Lewis Grabban the visitors possess a player capable of scoring as he has done in three of his last four and 11 times this season. This means taking a home win and both teams to score looks an option. Also, take a small play on Grabban to net at any time in this game as five of the last seven visitors to Molienux have netted at least once and if Sunderland are to score he looks the man to do so.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview

It is now six straight league victories for Wolves and nine from the last ten as they continue to lead the way in the table. They sat four above second placed Cardiff and ten above third going into the weekend. At Molineux, it is six straight victories and no defeat in their last eight matches and just one loss over the season (at home to Cardiff). They have netted 19 goals over their last seven fixtures while they have conceded just six in their last six in front of their own fans. Leo Bonatini has 12 league goals this season and is one behind the divisional top-scorer Leon Clarke who has 13. In just one of their last six league matches and two of their last ten have Wolves failed to score more than one goal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Team News

Ruben Neves is available after suspension while Carl Ikeme (cancer) and Phil Ofosu-Ayeh (hip) are long-term absentees.

Sunderland Preview

It is now four defeats in the last six for the Black Cats and things still look bleak as they sit in 23rd place with just 14 points. Three of their next five come against sides in the top 14 with the other two coming against Fulham and Birmingham. Away from the Stadium of Light, performances have been a little better but they have lost each of the three they have played at top nine sides. They have failed to find the back of the net in just one of their last seven on the road. Nine of their last 12 have gone over 2.5 goals with four of the last eight going over 3.5 goals. Lewis Grabban has been their main goal threat this season with 11 goals netted and eight in his last eight appearances.

Sunderland Team News

Callum McManaman will miss the game following a red card but James Vaughan is available after his suspension.  Jonny Williams (Shoulder), Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone (both knee), Billy Jones (foot), Bryan Oviedo (hamstring) and Patrick McNair (groin) are all doubts.  Duncan Watmore (cruciate) has been ruled out for the season.
