Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Preston North End Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the top five of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Wolves went top of the table after a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in their last game. Diogo Jota (six in seven) and Leo Bonatini (two in two) got the goals in a result that was well deserved as they dominated their Midlands rival. Preston drew their second successive game after letting a two-goal lead slip away to Fulham. The Lillywhites were two up in 25 minutes thanks to a goal each from Jordan Hugill and Sean Maguire but were undone by two in the last 16 minutes. The last time these side met at Molineux was last season and the Black Country outfit won on that occasion 1-0 thanks to a Danny Batth goal. Four of the last six meetings between the duo have ended all-square.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Wolves are strong favourites for this game and although I respect them as a team this is just the kind of game Preston love. They have already beaten Cardiff while drawing with Middlesbrough, Leeds and Fulham this season and at these prices look worth an interest in the double chance market. Three of the last five Wanderers home games have seen both teams score while North-End have netted seven in their last three on the road including two at Craven Cottage last time out so both teams to score also looks worth a play.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview

Wanderers look the side to beat in the Championship and bookmakers have them around evens to go and win the league title. They currently sit top with 26 points and have won four of their last five. At Molineux, they have played six league fixtures this season and have won four of these, drawing one (with Bristol City) and losing the other (with Cardiff). Three of their last five in front of their own fans has seen both teams score and gone over 2.5 goals. Only Hull have netted more divisional goals than Wolves while their defensive is a top six ranked unit. Around 48% of the goals they have scored have come in the 15 minutes before half-time or before full-time.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Team News

Carl Ikeme and Willy Boly (both hamstring) are looking for match fitness while Phil Ofosu-Ayeh (hip) is out until the new year.

Preston North End Preview

It is now nine without defeat in the league for the Lillywhites who sit in fifth place going into this round of fixtures. Three of their next four are against teams in the top ten though the way they have been playing against top sides shows they have nothing to be afraid of. Away from Deepdale, they have taken eight points from their last four fixtures and this includes useful points at Middlesbrough and Fulham. The secret to this has been a strong defence and they are one of four sides to share the record of best road defence in the Championship. No side has conceded a lower amount of goals than Preston (eight) which is a remarkable achievement as manager Alex Neil oversaw a poor Norwich defence last season. They are not a side for the neutral with a league low average of 1.92 goals per fixture and six of their 12 this season going under 1.5 goals.

Preston North End Team News

Gregory Cunningham (knee) and Sean Maguire (hamstring) are rated doubtful.
