Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday lunchtime (12:00) fixture is live on SKYTV and features two sides in need of points at different ends of the Championship.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wolves stretched their unbeaten run to six on Wednesday night as they defeated Derby 2-0 at Molienux.  Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves both netted to give Wanderers a comfortable three points.

Birmingham saw their four-game undefeated run come to an end in midweek as they were beaten 3-1 by Bristol City.  Lukas Jutkiewicz got their only goal of the match in a game that the Blues were probably the better team in.

The reverse fixture came in December and it ended in a 1-0 Wolves victory with a goal scored by Leo Bonatini.  It means that the home side have not won any of the last five meetings between the pair.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Wolves should win this game but I cannot bring myself to back them to do so at such short odds.  A lot about this game depends on what happens with the results Saturday as if teams around them lose a point here would be a bonus for Birmingham if teams around them win they might be forced to be more open than planned.

Both teams to score looks a little on the high side given that four of the last six visitors to Molineux have found the back of the net.  In each of their last seven at home Wanderers have netted at least two goals so over 2.5 goals also make sense.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview

The Black Country outfit have five victories and one draw from their last six a run that means it is a simple case of when and not if they gain promotion.  Their superior goal difference means they really need only one more point to be certain of playing in the Premier League next season.

At Molineux, they are unbeaten in their last seven having won five of these and over the season they have lost just twice in front of their own fans.  They have scored the most home goals this season with 45.

Six of the last eight Wolverhampton fixtures have gone over 2.5 goals though the last two have not.  Ruben Neves has netted in the last two league games while Diogo Jota has netted in two of the last three.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Team News

Bright Enobakhare (unknown), Joe Mason (stomach) and Phil Ofosu-Ayeh (ankle) are doubts.  Carl Ikeme is a long-term absentee as he continues his fight against Leukemia.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have taken ten points from the last 15 on offer which has been enough to move them out of the bottom three.  They are still not safe as three of their next four are against Wolves, Fulham and Sheffield United.

Away from St Andrew’s, they have lost five of their last six with the other being a victory at Bolton.  The 16 road goals they have scored this season is along with Burton the joint-second lowest in the division.

Lukas Jutkiewicz has now netted one goal in each of his last three league appearances for Birmingham.  In three of their last five and four of their last seven meetings with Wolves they have failed to score.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (knock), Sam Gallagher (calf) and Craig Gardener (hamstring) are doubts while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.  Che Adams will miss the game through suspension.
