Willem II vs Excelsior Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Willem II will take on Excelsior at the Koning Willem II Stadion on Sunday at lunchtime, with both sides looking to kick off the new Eredivisie campaign with a victory. Willem II were beaten 5-2 by Cercle Brugge in a friendly game a week ago, with Jordy Croux and Karim Coulibaly scoring their goals in the second half when they were already three goals down. Meanwhile, Excelsior lost 1-0 on the road at the fellow Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag on Saturday in a friendly fixture. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Excelsior looked much better than Willem II in pre-season, but I’m worried if they are capable of scoring goals after the departure of their last season’s top scorer Nigel Hasselbaink. On the other hand, Excelsior have struggled in the final third last term and they haven’t brought in any striker throughout this summer transfer window. The previous three meetings between these two sides have seen few than two goals scored and I think this will be the case in here as well.

Willem II Preview

Willem II kicked off their pre-season campaign brightly, having won each of their opening three friendlies. However, their recent run of form has seen them lose 4-0 against Genk and 5-2 against Cercle Brugge along with just a 1-1 draw against the Eerste Divisie side Eindhoven FC. Willem II are a small side and their main goal is to survive and they barely achieved that last term as they finished 13th in the standings, just two points clear of the drop zone. Scoring goals has been their main issue last season as they had the second worst attacking record in the division, having scored just 29 goals in 34 rounds. I was expecting them to bring in some attacking players throughout the summer transfer window, but instead, they opted to bring in several defensive players. Goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther moved in from Schalke 04 on a free transfer along with the right back Fernando Lewis from AZ Alkmaar, left back Konstantinos Tsimikas who came on loan from Olympiacos plus two other centre backs from Willem’s youth academy. Willem II need to start picking up points in front of their own fans if they are to survive this season, as they were the third worst home side in the Eredivisie last term. The bad news is that Willem II are winless in their last five home meetings with Excelsior in the Eredivisie, losing two and drawing three in the process.

Willem II Team News

Katuku Tshimanga, Bartholomew Ogbeche, Asmuah Abubakar and Jordy Croux are all doubts, but Bruno Andrade and Dico Koppers are both back in training.

Excelsior Preview

On the contrary, Excelsior had a decent pre-season campaign, winning four of their six friendlies. Excelsior managed to secure their Eredivisie status towards the end of the campaign last season, having won four of the final five fixtures. They eventually finished 12th in the Eredivisie table, three points clear of the relegation zone. They did well to score 43 goals last term, but their back line has let them down as they allowed 60 goals in 34 rounds. It appears that they have focused on strengthening their defence this summer as they brought in the left back Lorenzo Burnet from Slovan Bratislava and the right back Desevio Payne from FC Groningen, both on free transfers. Their back line looked solid throughout the preseason, conceding just four goals in six friendly fixtures. The bad news is that Excelsior allowed their last season’s top scorer Nigel Hasselbaink to leave the club on a free transfer as he joined the Israeli side Shmona. Away from home, Excelsior have been a mediocre side last term, collecting 14 points from their 17 league fixtures. However, their recent away form in the Eredivisie has seen them lost just once in five games. Furthermore, they should feel confident ahead of this trip as they are undefeated in the last five visits to the Koning Willem II Stadion.

Excelsior Team News

Anour Hadouri and Mike van Duinen are both doubts ahead of this trip.
