Wigan Athletic vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the top-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wigan are now three without a victory and looking to bounce back from an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Lancashire rivals Preston last time out. Although, the scoreline flattered North-End the Latics can have few complaints about the result with their misery further compounded by the 56th minute dismissal of Darron Gibson.

West Brom stretched their unbeaten league run to seven matches with a comfortable 4-1 defeat of Reading prior to the international break. Dwight Gayle netted twice, Harvey Barnes and Kyle Bartley once as they wrapped up the points with a 31 minute blast.

The last meetings between these sides came back in the 2012/13 Premier League season so it is hard to read too much into them. For what it is worth the side hosting the fixture have failed to win any of the last five head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to argue with the prices on offer here which make West Brom favourites by virtue of them being the better team but pay respect to the fact that Wigan are unbeaten at their own ground since February.

The both teams to score market seems well covered but try a little interest on both teams to score in the second-half with the Baggies scoring the bulk of their goals this season in the second-half. This also opens up this area to the be highest scoring period of the match so get involved with that also.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics have had a mixed start to the season with five victories, two draws and five defeats from their opening 12. They sit in 12th place and have a tricky run ahead with four of their next six against top six sides.

At the DW Stadium, they are unbeaten this season with four wins and two draws and you have to go back to February for their last home league defeat. Only Middlesbrough (two) and Leeds (four) have a better home record than the Lancashire outfit (five).

Wigan have netted 14 times this season with Nick Powell (four) and Will Grigg (three) combining for half of these. They have conceded 16 times in the Championship though four of these came in the previous fixture.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Gavin Massey (hamstring) is out until January while James Vaughan (knock) is a doubt. Darron Gibson will miss the game through suspension.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

The Baggies have made a good adjustment to life back in the Championship winning seven, drawing three and losing just two of their opening 12. They sit in second place with just three points separating the top four sides.

Away from the Hawthorns, they have lost just once but have a tendency to draw with three finishing all-square and just two victories. Only Leeds (12) have scored more road goals than the 11 the Black Country outfit netted.

West Brom have a massive nine goals more than any other side in the division with 31 led by Dwight Gayle with eight while Jay Rodriguez has seven and Harvey Barnes five. Their defence has let in 17 goals and has kept a clean sheet just once this campaign.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Bakary Sako (broken ankle) and Matt Phillips (muscle) are doubtful.
