Wigan Athletic vs Leeds United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday lunchtime (13:30) fixture features two sides who after strong starts have cooled off a little. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wigan suffered their second successive defeat at the weekend suffering a 4-2 road loss at Sheffield United. Kai Naismith and Joe Garner got their goals but the Blades were deserved winners.

Leeds made it just one win from their last four as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Nottingham Forest. Kemar Roofe netted the goal to give them a point that was the least they deserved.

These two sides were in different divisions last season so you need to go back to the 2016/17 season for their last meetings. It has been honours even of late with two wins each and two draws (including their last two) from their last six head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Leeds are strong favourites here but given Wigan have not been beaten at their own ground all season I would not be backing them. The Latics have slowed a little though and as such I would not be backing them either.

Four of the last five for the hosts at the DW have gone under 1.5 goals so I will recommend the main bet on under 2.5 goals and then a smaller bet on under 1.5 goals in what could be a tight encounter.

Wigan Athletic Preview

It is just one win in six (including four defeats) for a Latics side who started the season well but seem to be levelling out now. They sit in 14th and now face back-to-back games against top three teams.

At the DW Stadium, they have been impressive winning five, drawing two and losing none of their seven played in the league. Four of the last five visitors here have failed to find the back of the net.

Wigan have netted 18 goals which is in the bottom-half for attacking returns and they have blanked in three of their last six. They have conceded 22 times though 17 of these have come on the road.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Gary Roberts, Gavin Massey, Michael Jacobs and Will Grigg (all hamstring) are doubts. Darron Gibson is available following his suspension while Lee Evans who had to miss the last game due to loan conditions can also return.

Leeds United Preview

The Whites have won just one of their last four and are unlikely to do a Wolves this season and dominate the league. They sit second and have three of their next four against teams outside the top ten.

Away from Elland Road, a defeat at Blackburn on their last road trip was their first on their travels this season. The Yorkshire outfit have scored exactly one goal in each of their four previous on the road.

Leeds have scored 26 goals this season and this gives them the third best attacking record in the division. They have conceded 12 goals which gives them the third best defensive record though they have just two clean sheets in their last seven.

Leeds United Team News

Gaetano Berardi, Barry Douglas (both hamstring) and Conor Shaughnessy (muscle strain) are doubts while Patrick Bamford (knee) and Izzy Brown (unknown) are long-term absentees.
