Wigan Athletic vs Derby County Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wigan stretched their unbeaten run to three last time out as they battled out a 1-1 draw on the road to Bolton. A Will Grigg penalty put them level and despite more of the ball they could not find a further breakthrough.

Derby continued their win one, lose one sequence from their last five matches with a 2-1 home victory over Swansea. Harry Wilson netted a brace to give them a deserved three points.

The side that has hosted this fixture has failed to win any of the six previous head-to-head meetings. Not just that but four of the last five have seen the side at home failing to net.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Wigan have lost just once all season but I think Derby might just have too much for them here. The Latics have gone three unbeaten but this includes draws with Bolton and Reading and a home victory over a Blackburn side who did not show up. The Rams have won at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday lately and I think they can do the same here.

Harry Wilson is the main man at County with seven for the last season and four in the last three and he looks value here to net at any time.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics have taken five points from their last three though have won just one of their last seven. They sit in 15th place in the table and bookmakers have them as ninth favourites for the drop.

At the DW Stadium, they have lost just once this season and that came against high-flying Leeds. They are about to embark upon a tricky run of home matches with each of their next six against teams in the current top 12.

Will Grigg is their joint top-scorer this season with four goals with his goal last weekend the first in the league since August. Nick Powell also has four for the season though he has not netted since September.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Nick Powell, Gavin Massey, Michael Jacobs (all hamstring) are doubts while Cheyenne Dunkley (knee) and Antonee Robinson (ankle are set to miss the next few months.

Derby County Preview

The Rams have lost just two of their previous ten though these defeats have come in their last four. They sit in seventh place and they are also seventh favourites for the league title with bookmakers.

Away from Pride Park, they have lost just one of their last five which came on their last road trip to Stoke. After this the next three road trips they make are to sides currently in the top seven.

Harry Wilson is their leading goal getter this season with seven with four in the last three and six in the last seven. Jack Marriott has five goals in the league and six in his last nine in all competitions.

Derby County Team News

Jack Marriott (foot), George Evans (hip) and Joe Ledley (back) are all doubts. Curtis Davies (Achilles),  Craig Forsyth, Marcus Olsson (both cruciate) and Mason Bennett (hamstring) are all long-term absentees. Bradley Johnson will sit out the first of a four-game suspension.
