Wigan Athletic vs Brentford Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Two sides at the wrong end of the table will do battle at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon (15:00). Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Callum Connolly netted twice on his debut as the Latics saw off Burton 2-0 last time out to gain a crucial three points in their fight against relegation. Brentford fought hard in their previous encounter going down 2-1 at home to Newcastle with Lasse Vibe netting for the Bees. The last head-to-head meeting the duo was back on October 1st and it ended in a 0-0 draw in a game that was low on chances.

Wigan Preview

It is now four points from the last two for Wigan a run that has seen them close the gap at the bottom of the table to just three points behind Burton who sit in 21st with the Latics in 23rd position. The Lancashire side are doing their best work on the road though and have not won in their last six games at home. They have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last four at the DW and have the worst home ranked attack in the division. Matches involving Wigan tend to be low scoring with eight of their last ten going under 2,5 goals and 16 of their 26 total league fixtures. A clean sheet has been kept by one or more sides in eight of their last ten.

Brentford Preview

Just two defeats from their last seven and one in their last four has seen Brentford climb back up the table into 15th place. The Bees have won two of their last three on the road with victories at Birmingham and Bristol City and they will not be afraid of a visit to Wigan who have not beaten a side inside the top 15 at home this season. The over and under split for the London side is close with 14 of their 26 league fixtures this season going under 2.5 and 12 going over. This breaks down to seven under and six over when looking at their away clashes.

Wigan Team News

Graham Joyce has a lengthy injury list with as many as nine players on it.  Luke Garbutt (back) is the nearest to return with Reece James (ankle) a good few weeks away. It is unclear just how long Alex Gilbey (ankle), Andy Kellett (hamstring), Dan Lavercombe (finger), David Perkins (hamstring), Donervon Daniels (knee), Kyle Knoyle (elbow) and Reece Burke (hip) are out for.

Brentford Team News

Rico Henry is back in training following a dislocated shoulder while Callum Elder (knee) is a few days away from a return.  Two players who will not feature for a while are Alan Judge (broken leg) and Lewis MacLeod (knee).

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite the improved form from Brentford, I think Wigan look worth siding with at these prices with home advantage and question marks still hanging over the sale of Scott Hogan from Brentford to West Ham.

Callum Connolly netted twice last week after completing a loan from Everton and in a game where neither a side are blessed with prolific scorers he looks worth an investment to be the first goalscorer.
