Wigan Athletic vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the middle-third of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wigan stretched their winless run to three and made it back-to-back defeats going down 1-0 at Ipswich. Athletic can consider themselves unlucky as they were the stronger team on expected goals data but could not find a breakthrough.

Birmingham stretched their winless run to two but having been two down with 12 minutes to play would have settled for a draw. A goal from Che Adams and a Craig Gardener penalty earned them a point at Blackburn.

The last meetings between these sides came in the 2016/17 Championship season with the Latics taking four points from the two encounters. In fact, the Lancashire outfit have lost just one of their last eight with the Midlands side.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to argue with the prices on offer here which make Wigan narrow favourites because of their home advantage but respect the fact that Birmingham will be difficult opponents.

The hosts have been behind just once going into the break at their own ground this season while the visitors have been behind just four times so back the game to be level going into the break.

Che Adams is a threat on the counter for the Blues especially on the road and I think he looks the selection to net at any time and add to his ten goals this season.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics started the season well but a run of just one victory from the previous nine means they have to put in check any hopes of back-to-back promotions. They sit 16th in the table and will be looking over their shoulder with six points and six places between them and the relegation spots.

At the DW Stadium, the Lancashire side have won just one of their last four but were unbeaten here prior to that. Just two of the last seven in front of their own fans has seen both teams net.

Wigan have been behind just four times going into the break this season and just once when looking at home matches. 14 of the 23 they have scored in the Championship have come prior to the interval.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Nick Powell, Michael Jacobs (both hamstring) are doubts while Antonee Robinson (ankle) is set to miss the next few months. Kai Naismith is available after suspension.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have been a mixed bag of late with three victories, two draws and three defeats in their last eight. They sit tenth in the Championship table four places and five points outside the top six.

Away from St Andrew’s, the Midlands outfit have won just one of their last four but lost just two of the last nine. They have netted at least once in each of their last seven matches on the road.

Birmingham would be as high as eighth in a table settled on score after the opening 45 minutes. They have been behind just four times going into the break through three of these have come on the break.

Birmingham City Team News

Isaac Vassell (hip) and David Davis (ankle) have returned to training and are closing in on returns.  Michael Morrison (hamstring) and Marc Roberts (calf) are set to miss the next few weeks.
