Wigan Athletic vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture will have an impact on both ends of the table as the side in 20th play host to the team in tenth. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Wigan were eliminated from the FA Cup by fellow Championship side West Brom going down to a 1-0 defeat. In the league, their winless run is at seven following a 3-0 home loss to Sheffield United on New Year’s Day.

Aston Villa were eliminated from the cup by a Championship side as they went down 3-0 at home to Swansea. In the Championship, they have had back-to-back draws the latest of which was a 2-2 with a Tammy Abraham brace not proving enough for all three points.

The reverse fixture came on August 11th at Villa Park with Villa winning an entertaining affair 3-2. The goalscorers on that day were James Chester, Bjorn Bjarnason and an own-goal for the home side and Nick Powell and Callum Connolly for the visitors.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I think Aston Villa look the bet here as they have won three of their last five on the road and this includes victories against Derby, Middlesbrough and Swansea. Wigan have lost their last three at home and the visitors have far too much firepower for them especially as Tammy Abraham has committed to the cause-

The Latics have failed to net in four of their last five at home while the Midlands side have kept clean sheets three of their last five on the road so a Villa clean sheet also appeals.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics have taken just one point from their last five fixtures a run that has seen them drop down to 20th place. They sit four points above the relegation places through each of their next four are against top 16 sides.

At the DW Stadium, the Lancashire outfit have lost three straight having lost just one of the ten prior to that. A lack of goals is an issue at their place with them in each of their last three and four of their last five in front of their own fans.

Wigan have moved to bring in midfielder Lee Evans from Sheffield United and Anthony Pilkington from Cardiff to boost their squad and have also recalled Jamie Walker from a spell at Peterbrough. Max Power meanwhile has gone out on loan to Sunderland.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Michael Jacobs  and Gavin Massey (both hamstring) are doubts while Nick Powell (also hamstring) and Antonee Robinson (ankle) are long-term absentees.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa have been a mixed bag of late with one victory, one defeat and four draws from their last six. They sit tenth and five points off the play-offs with four straight fixtures against bottom 12 sides.

Away from Villa Park, the Midlands side are unbeaten in their last five in the league winning three of these. They have kept clean sheets in three of these five and shipped just four in their last six on the road.

Villa have signed keeper Lovre Kalinic while are close to completing a loan deal for defender Kortney Hause. They have also kept Tammy Abraham who was contemplating a move to Premier League side Wolves.

Aston Villa Team News

Axel Tuanzebe (foot), Mile Jedinak (unknown), Jack Grealish (shin), Rushlan Hepburn-Murphy (knee) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are doubts. Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland (Achilles) is out for the remainder of the season.
