West Ham United vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

West Ham United host Chelsea at the London Stadium on 09/12/17 in a meeting of two teams at opposite ends of the table. West Ham lost 2-1 away to Man City last time out, while Chelsea drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

West Ham looked better against Man City last weekend, but their winless run makes it difficult to back them to get anything here. Chelsea look like they are hitting form over the festive period and I’m expecting them to pick up three points here.

West Ham United Preview

David Moyes came away with positives to take from his side’s performance against Manchester City last weekend, though he certainly would’ve swapped it for points after seeing their lead slip in a 2-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium. Angelo Ogbonna stunned Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten men with a header on the stroke of half-time as they looked to bring their incredible streak to an end. However, like so many sides who have faced City this season, West Ham became overwhelmed by their dominance in the second half, as Nicolas Otamendi dragged them level before David Silva scored the winner seven minutes from time. Moyes now has just a point from his four Premier League games in charge of the Hammers, who have now dropped to 19th and below even Crystal Palace in the table a - team many believed were dead and buried just eight games into the season. The Hammers are still unable to adapt to their new home, winning just twice there in six all season and are without a win in three, with the fans unable to generate anything like the vociferous atmosphere of Upton Park. The club look almost unrecognisable from what they once were at this stage two years ago, lacking their previous intensity levels which is demonstrated by the fact they have the worst distance covered stats in the league.

West Ham United Team News

Sam Byram (thigh), Jose Fonte (ankle) and Winston Reid (hamstring) are all missing here. Mark Noble (hip), Cheikhou Kouyate (hamstring) and Javier Hernandez (hamstring) will be assessed.

Chelsea Preview

Antonio Conte may still be wondering how his Chelsea side failed to win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last time out, going through as group runners-up after a 1-1 draw with the Spanish outfit. Chelsea were on top for virtually the entirety of the fixture, missing a number of excellent chances before Saul headed the away side in front from close range. They weren’t to leave the game empty handed, though, as Stefan Savic deflected in Eden Hazard’s low ball as Atletico were eliminated from the competition, while Chelsea went through behind group winners Roma. Conte’s men have been in excellent form in the Premier League in recent weeks, winning six and drawing one of their last seven games, though they still find themselves 11 points short of leaders Manchester City. Having Hazard looking back to his very best will be a huge boost to this team, with the Belgian being arguably the best individual talent in the Premier League on his day. Both he and Alvaro Morata have struck a telepathic understanding up front and will be crucial over this period as they look to close the gap between themselves and the top two. With the Manchester derby commencing this weekend, this is a real opportunity for Chelsea to make ground in the title race.

Chelsea Team News

David Luiz (knee) remains missing for Chelsea here.
