West Bromwich Albion vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening fixture (19:45) is live on Sky Sports and is a Midlands derby between two top eight sides. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

West Brom stretched their unbeaten run to four matches though will have been disappointed to only draw 1-1 at home to Brentford. It was a game Albion dominated but they only converted one chance through Harvey Barnes and allowed the opposition to steal a point at the end.

Aston Villa are flying now under Dean Smith and are now five unbeaten following an impressive 3-0 win at Middlesbrough. James Chester, Tammy Abraham and Glenn Whelan all weighed in with a goal each to give them a deserved three points.

These two sides last met in the 2015/16 Premier League season so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-head record.  In just one of their last ten meetings the side playing away has come out on top.

Betting Tips and Predictions

West Brom are favourites to win the game but the odds reflect how well Aston Villa are currently playing. Given recent victories at Derby and Middlesbrough the visitors could be a popular bet here but if you take a long-term view these two sides are of similar ability and the home advantage means this looks a no bet.

Away from the match markets is where the value can be found and with Villa having bagged 17 goals in their last five and six from their last two on the road taking them to score over 1.5 here looks sensible.  I also like the look of them scoring their first goal before 50:00 as they have a combined six in the first-half from their last three.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

The Baggies have taken ten points from their last four games and look set to be one of the promotion contenders this season. They sit in third after 20 games and bookmakers have them as third favourites for the title.

At the Hawthorns, they have won just one of their last four though they have lost just two times in front of their own fans this season. They have their fate in their own hands somewhat as five of their next seven at home are against teams in the top eight.

Harvey Barnes is in good scoring form with three in his last four while the season top scorers are Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez with nine each. No side have scored more goals than the 42 West Brom have bagged this campaign.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Kyle Bartley and Bakary Sako (both knee) are doubts ahead of this fixture.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa are flying at the moment with 13 points from their last five fixtures and an impressive 17 goals from these five. They sit eighth in the table but bookmakers are impressed and have them fifth favourites for the title.

Away from Villa Park, they have won their last two and both came by the same 3-0 scoreline and both at top eight sides. After this the Midands outfit play none of the top eight in their next road trips.

Tammy Abraham is red-hot at the moment with seven in the last four and ten from the previous ten. Aston Villa are the second highest scorers in the Championship with 37 goals scored 17 of which have come from the last five.

Aston Villa Team News

Albert Adomah (ankle), Henri Lansbury (hamstring), Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (knee), James Bree (knock), Micah Richards (fitness), Birkir Bjarnason, Keinan Davis (both groin) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are doubts.  Alan Hutton is available after missing the last game with a suspension.
