Watford vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Watford face Stoke City at Vicarage Road on 28/10/17, with both teams facing particularly different starts to this first quarter of the Premier League season. Watford will have felt unfortunate to have gone down 4-2 away to Chelsea last weekend, with Stoke losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth in their last outing. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The hosts have looked excellent under Marco Silva this season, establishing themselves in the top six after nine games. Stoke meanwhile look short of confidence and ideas at present, with the hosts looking good value this weekend.

Watford Preview

Marco Silva may still be wondering how his team were unable to come away from Chelsea with at least a point last weekend, eventually going down 4-2 at Stamford Bridge. Pedro put the hosts in front early in the first half, but strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Roberto Pereyra stunned the defending champions, who were 2-1 behind with 40 minutes to play. Richarlison then missed two glorious chances which could’ve put the Hornets out of sight, instead two Michy Batshuayi efforts either side of a Cesar Azpilicueta goal saw Chelsea come away with three points. Having also defeated Arsenal the week prior, Watford have shown they are capable of competing with the league’s big boys so far - other than when being defeated 6-0 by Manchester City. There is real confidence and continuity in this team, with Silva drilling each player to ensure they know their role in the team, as is being shown by their performances and results on the pitch. Away from home they have been particularly impressive, though they will be looking to improve at Vicarage Road following a win, a defeat and two draws from their first four games on home turf so far this season.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul (hamstring), Craig Cathcart and Nathaniel Chalobah (both knee) are all out this weekend. Sebastian Prodl (hamstring) and Isaac Success (leg) are both doubts.

Stoke City Preview

This fixture is entering must-win territory for Stoke City boss Mark Hughes following a significant 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth. Significant because the Cherries, like Stoke, had been struggling heading into the fixture, with Bournemouth now sitting just a point behind the Potters in the table. Andrew Surman’s cultured finish put Bournemouth ahead, with Junior Stanislas netting just two minutes later from the penalty spot to leave the Potters 2-0 behind after 20 minutes. Mame Biram Diouf did pull one back for the hosts in the second half but they were unable to ultimately build on it, leaving Stoke 17th heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures. Since winning promotion to the Premier League, the Potters have never particularly looked like a team in danger of facing the drop, but their current start to this season has to be of real concern to Peter Coates and the rest of the Stoke board. With just one win from their last eight games, they have managed to somewhat carry over their form from the back end of last season into this, having finished 2016/17 with just two wins from eleven. Hughes, along with Slaven Bilic, is under severe pressure to get a result this weekend or potentially face the possibility of the sack.

Stoke City Team News

Bruno Martins Indi (calf) is still doubtful for Stoke, but Xherdan Shaqiri (ankle) could return. Stephen Ireland (broken leg) remains absent.
