With neither side in particularly strong form at this moment in time, this is one of the tougher games to predict this weekend, and I’m expecting this to be a draw.

Watford Preview

Marco Silva’s men took a step in the right direction in terms of escaping their recent slump last weekend after beating Championship side Bristol City 3-0 at Vicarage Road. With the visitors concentrated on their EFL Cup tie with Manchester City, Watford comfortably avenged their defeat in that competition to the Robins, taking the lead through Andre Carrillo eight minutes before half-time. Troy Deeney doubled the Hornets’ lead in the second half to mark his return from suspension, before Etienne Capoue put the result beyond doubt five minutes from time. The cup proved to be a welcome distraction for a Watford side who prior to that game had won just one of their last nine Premier League outings, though their strong early season form helped in the fact they still remain in the top half, currently sitting 10th. Without it, they could’ve been in far greater danger and are still far from guaranteed safety, finding themselves only five points above 18th-placed Stoke City. This will be the first of two meetings in the space of two weeks between Watford and Southampton, with Silva taking his side to St. Mary’s for the fourth round of the FA Cup in a fortnight.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul (foot) and Nathaniel Chalobah (knee) are both ruled out for Watford. Miguel Britos (leg), Kiko and Will Hughes (both hamstring) are all doubts.

Southampton Preview

An ounce of pressure was lifted from the shoulders of Mauricio Pellegrino last weekend, as he guided his team to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win away to Championship side Fulham. The game’s only goal came just before the half-hour mark, as James Ward-Prowse’s clinical left-foot strike found its way past David Button in the Fulham goal, in what Pellegrino will hope proves to be a morale-boosting result. Relief was perhaps the overriding emotion for the Saints players after the Craven Cottage success, though it does not take away from the fact they are without a win in their last nine Premier League games, winning a total of one in 13 since late October. Such form has seen Pellegrino become one of the most under-pressure managers in the Premier League, as they now look to extend their four-game unbeaten run away to Watford to five games. Southampton have a lucrative warchest of £75m to spend this month after the sale of Virgil van Dijk, with both Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge on their wishlist of targets.

Southampton Team News

Cedric Soares (ankle) and Charlie Austin (hamstring) remain absent, but Wesley Hoedt (concussion) could return.
