Watford vs Huddersfield Town Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Watford host Huddersfield Town at Vicarage Road on 16/12/17 as both teams look to bounce back from disappointing defeats in midweek. Watford’s late collapse saw them lose 2-1 away to Crystal Palace, while Chelsea were convincing 3-1 winners at Huddersfield. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Losing in such circumstances at Selhurst Park will have really irked Marco Silva, having seen his team lead so late. Despite the setback, Huddersfield have been poor away from home this season and I’m expecting the home side to bounce back with a win here.

Watford Preview

Watford lost in incredible fashion away to Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening, with the relegation candidates escaping the bottom three for the first time this season after a late 2-1 victory. Daryl Janmaat gave the visitors a perfect start, taking the lead after just three minutes, with Richarlison assisting the Dutch full-back. The Hornets had chances to kill the game off but their wastefulness would soon haunt them, with Tom Cleverley being sent off in the 87th minute. Then, two minutes later, Bakary Sako equalised for the home side, before James McArthur sealed the incredible turnaround in the second minute of stoppage time. With that result, it’s now no wins in four for Watford, having lost three and drawn one during that run, leaving Silva to try and restore confidence amongst the squad heading into a crucial festive period. They will feel confident in doing so due to the fact three of their next four games are at home, with that run featuring games against Huddersfield, Brighton, Leicester and Swansea. Goals have also been hard to come by of late, netting just two in their last three games and strikers Andre Gray and Troy Deeney have scored four goals between them so far this season. Richarlison has been their shining light this season, bagging five goals in 17 games, being one of only five players in the Watford squad to feature in every league game this season.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul, Will Hughes (both hamstring), Craig Cathcart and Nathaniel Chalobah (both knee) are missing. Miguel Britos (leg), Kiko (muscle) and Stefano Okaka (calf) are doubtful, while Marvin Zeegelaar is suspended.

Huddersfield Town Preview

Through no lack of effort nor industry, Huddersfield were well-beaten 3-1 by Chelsea last time out, as the reigning Premier League champions returned to winning ways. Tiemoue Bakayoko bursted into the box and clipped the ball over the onrushing Jonas Lossl for a classy opener, before Willian headed home Marcos Alonso’s cross for the second. Pedro made it 3-0 early in the second half to put the game well beyond the Terriers’ reach, who did at least strike with a consolation in stoppage time through substitute Laurent Depoitre, who now has goals against both Manchester United and Chelsea on his CV this season. Make no mistake, games such as Chelsea are not where Huddersfield will make or break their season, but David Wagner must be at the very least slightly concerned with his team’s current trajectory. Losing five of their last six in the Premier League, they have especially struggled away from home, losing six and drawing one of their seven games on the road since their 3-0 win at Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season. That occasion is also the only time in which this team has scored an away goal and will need a quick resolution.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Philip Billing (ankle) and Jon-Gorenc Stankovic (cruciate ligament) are both set to miss out, though Michael Hefele (achilles) is close to a return to action.
