Wales vs Ireland Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Wales and the Republic of Ireland will square off at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday night, with both teams looking to close the gap at the top of the World Cup qualifying group D table. Wales managed a narrow 0-1 away victory over Georgia last Friday thanks to a second-half goal from Tom Lawrence. Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland won 2-0 at home over Moldova three days ago, with Daryl Murphy scoring a brace in the first 20 minutes of the game. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Ireland are in dire need of a victory in this one, while Wales need only a point to secure second place in the group. It’s a difficult game to call, but I’m not expecting goals. Wales have only conceded two goals in four home qualifiers, while Ireland only netted two goals in their most recent two qualifying away games. Furthermore, the most recent two meetings between these two teams have ended in goalless draws.

Wales Preview

Both sides are involved in one of the tightest battles for a World Cup place across Europe after Austria’s unexpected 3-2 victory over Serbia. Wales did well to reach the Semi-finals of the Euro 2016 and they also had a solid World Cup qualifying campaign. They are yet to lose a single game throughout this World Cup qualification process, winning four and drawing five of their nine qualifiers. Wales picked up a hard-fought 0-1 away win in Georgia last Friday to extend their recent winning streak to three games. Wales looked solid at the back over the past seven months, keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five qualifiers. Actually, they hold the best offensive record in the group with just five goals conceded in nine games. This leaves them in second position in the group D table with 17 points under their belts after nine rounds, just one point of the current leaders Serbia and one point clear of the third-placed and their Monday’s opponents Ireland. At home, Wales are undefeated in four games throughout this qualifying campaign, conceding just two goals in this term. The most worrying fact is that Wales are winless in five meetings with Ireland across all competitions, losing two and drawing four in the process.

Wales Team News

Wales are still Gareth Bale and Jazz Richards, but they still have enough firepower in their squad in the shape of Hal Robson-Kanu, Sam Vokes and Aaron Ramsey.

Ireland Preview

On the contrary, Ireland have finally got to winning ways last Friday, as they won 2-0 at home over Moldova. Prior to this result, they only managed three consecutive draws against Wales, Austria and Georgia along with a disappointing 0-1 home loss at the hands of Serbia. However, thanks to their recent win over Moldova, Ireland managed to keep their qualification hopes alive and need a win in this game in order to secure at least a play-off spot, as a draw won’t be enough for them. The Irish currently sit in third in the group D table with 16 points after nine games, two points adrift of the current leaders Serbia. Ireland have struggled to find the back of the net throughout this qualifying campaign, as they hold the worst attacking record in top four with just 11 goals under their belts. James McClean and Daryl Murphy have been Ireland’s most prolific players in front of goal throughout this WC qualifying campaign, having scored three goals each. The good news is that Ireland are unbeaten in four away qualifiers, winning two and drawing two in the process. They should be confident ahead of this tie as they are unbeaten in five meetings with Wales, keeping a clean sheet in four of these. However, three of these games have ended in draws and a draw isn’t enough for them to book a place in Russia next summer.

Ireland Team News

Robbie Brady and James McClean are both back in the squad following their suspensions, but Seamus Coleman is still on the sidelines due to injury.
