Wales vs Austria Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Wales and Austria will be facing each other at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday night, with both sides looking to extend their unbeaten run in their World Cup qualifying group D. Wales threw away a one-goal lead to settle for a 1-1 away draw against Serbia last time out, with Aaron Ramsey giving them the lead from the spot soon after the half-hour mark. Austria, on the other hand, have also had a one-goal lead against Ireland back in June following a first-half goal from Martin Hinteregger, but the hosts leveled the game with just five minutes to go and both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

This is a crucial fixture for Wales and they need to grab all three points despite the fact that their recent form has seen them drew their last five games in this qualifying campaign. Despite the recent struggle, Wales have been a tough nut to crack at home over the past few years, while Austria only managed a narrow 1-2 away victory over Georgia in the qualifiers.

Wales Preview

Many people expected Wales to carry this Euro 2016 form into this World Cup qualifying campaign, but that hasn’t turned out to be the case. The Welsh kicked off the campaign with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Moldova, but they drew the other five group fixtures, including a disappointing 1-1 stalemate against Georgia. Wales currently sit third in the group D table tied on eight points with their Saturday’s opponents Austria, already four points of the joint leaders Ireland and Serbia. This is the perfect time for Wales to bounce back to winning ways, especially after they were very close to securing a victory over Austria in the reverse fixture. The Welsh had a one-goal lead twice, but the Austrians came from behind each time to secure a 2-2 draw. Wales’ recent home form hasn’t been great as they have only won once in their last five home fixtures across all competitions. The good news is that Wales have won two of their three home meetings with Austria, conceding just once in the process. Furthermore, Wales are undefeated in the last two games against Austria, scoring two goals in each of these. Gareth Bale is Wales’ topscorer at the moment with 4 goals under his belt and is the 11/10 outright favourite in the anytime goalscorer market for this.

Wales Team News

Aaron Ramsey has been passed fit for Wales’ fixture against Austria. Joe Allen and Aston Villa have both trained with the squad despite being suspended for the Austria game.

Austria Preview

On the other hand, Austria have endured a mixed run of form over the past year, winning two, drawing five and losing three of their last ten games across all competitions. The Austrians are currently on a four-game unbeaten run, although three of these have ended in draws. This leaves them in 4th in the group D table tied on eight points with Wales, four points of the second-placed Ireland. Away from home, Austria have failed to win in their most recent two qualifiers, registering a 3-2 loss against Serbia and a 1-1 draw against Ireland. They have only won once in their three visits to Ireland, but they showed some great fighting spirit in the reverse fixture as they fought back from one-goal down to secure a 2-2 home draw. Overall, Austria’s form over the past eight months has seen them win just once in their last seven games across all competitions. Marko Arnautovic has been Austria’s most prolific player in front of goal throughout this qualifying campaign with three goals under his belt in five appearances. Martin Hinteregger and Marc Janko have also been in fine shape during this campaign, as the pair bagged four goals and two assists between them.

Austria Team News

Guido Burgstaller is out of Austria’s squad to face Wales and the Austrian social media suggest Stefan Hierlander will be the replacement for him.
