VfB Stuttgart vs FC Cologne Match Prediction

By William Hall

Stuttgart welcome Cologne to the Mercedes Benz Arena this weekend in the Bundesliga, and with both teams starting the season very poorly, the international break may have come at the right time. Stuttgart suffered their fourth defeat of the season a couple of weeks ago as Eintracht Frankfurt scored the 93rd minute to break the hearts of the Stuttgart faithful. If you thought the home sides form was bad, it is much worse for Cologne who have suffered six defeats and drawing just one in their first seven games. Currently sitting at the bottom of the table, a result is much needed this weekend. Read on for a full match preview complete with all our best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With these two teams being in such bad form up to now, it is hard to call. However, although Stuttgart haven't had a great start, it has been miles better than their opponents this weekend. They haven't had a win in three games, losing two and drawing one in that time. They will see this as a perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways and get further away from the drop zone which even at this stage is important for any team.

Cologne have in truth has a shocking start to the season, and as it stands, I struggle to see them getting out of it. They lack a striker in their side who will go out and score 20+ goals a season which is a considerable worry. As well as having the worst goal record in the league, they are also struggling to keep them out having conceded 15 in seven games, which is the worst in the Bundesliga. Something needs to change at the club, but I can't see that being this weekend.

VfB Stuttgart Preview

Stuttgart have managed to pick up just two wins so far this season, drawing once and losing the other four. It has not been the start they would have wanted, and with three games without a win coming into this game, confidence will not be very high. Last time out Stuttgart would have been feeling sorry for themselves after conceding a 93rd-minute goal which left them with nothing to show for their efforts. It would have been bitterly disappointing for the side especially with Frankfurt being down to 10 men for around 30 minutes of the game. 22-year-old Chadrac Akolo looks as if he is going to be the main source of goals this season with the player leading on two. He managed to bag 15 for Swiss side Sion last season, showing he knows where the back of the net is.

VfB Stuttgart Team News

Stuttgart have seven people out or doughtful this weekend with Emiliano Snsua (knee injury), Ailton Ferreira Silva (ankle injury), Anto Grgic (ankle injury), Carlos Mane (knee injury), Christian Gentner (head injury), Holger Badstuber (knee injury) and Matthias Zimmermann (ACL) all sidelined.

FC Cologne Preview

Cologne have had the worst possible start to the season, picking up just one point in their opening seven games. This has left them at the bottom of the Bundesliga, already six points from safety. Last time out Cologne were beaten 2-1 at home to RB Leipzig and its truth, it was a comfortable win the away side. An 82rd-minute goal from Cologne made it a tense last ten, but it always seemed as if RB Leipzig were going to take all three points. That goal against Leipzig was only the sides second of the season, showing how much they are struggling in front of goal at the moment. A win is desperately needed for the away team this weekend, but with the form they are on, it could be a struggle.

FC Cologne Team News

Cologne have nine players who will miss the trip to Stuttgart with Simon Zoller (back injury), Christian Clemens (ill), Matthias Lehmann (unkwown), Timo Horn (hip injury), Marcel Risse (mesiscus injury), Marius Laux (unknown), Jhon Cordoba (thigh injury), Jonas Hector (ankle injury) and Nikolas Nartey (meniscus injury) all out.
