Valencia vs Athletic Bilbao Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Valencia come into the match after having secured a second consecutive La Liga win, as they beat Real Sociedad 3-2 at the Anoeta. Valencia dropped the lead twice in the game after goals from Rodrigo and Nacho Vidal were cancelled out by goals from Aritz Elustondo and Mikel Oyarzabal. However, Simone Zaza pounced with an 85th minute winner to end the home team’s resistance. Athletic Bilbao’s poor form continued with a 3-3 draw against Malaga during the weekend. Despite being down to 10 men, Malaga were able to cancel out goals from Aduriz and Inaki Williams (2). A brace from Diego Rolan and an effort from Paul Baysse were crucial in the game. In the midweek Europa League action, Athletic Bilbao lost 1-0 at home against Zorya.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The strong run of the form coming into the game places Valencia as overwhelming favourites to get a victory. Five out of the recent six matches between these two teams has seen the home team come out successful. There is a far greater possibility of the trend continuing, as Athletic Bilbao have been on a rotten form in the recent few weeks. Athletic Bilbao have lost three out of the last four matches in all competitions. I see excellent value in backing a victory for Valencia. Simone Zaza scored in the recent meeting with Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla last season. He has been in excellent form over the last few weeks after managing to score four goals in the last two games. I would back Simone Zaza to score anytime.

Valencia Preview

Valencia are on a great run of form, as the club have been able to take advantage of forwards like Simone Zaza being on a good run of form. Valencia are now one of the three teams – Atletico Madrid and Barcelona being the others – left in the La Liga 2017-18 season yet to suffer a defeat. The only worry for manager Marcelino maybe the lack of too many wins, as the team has managed only three wins in the first six matches. Simone Zaza is the leading scorer at Valencia with five league goals.

Valencia Team News

Ruben Vezo (toe) and Javier Jimenez (cruciate ligament) are players unavailable for Valencia.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

The good start to the season with a strong defensive record has quickly been forgotten, as Athletic Bilbao are now winless in the last five matches in all competitions. The club have been sliding down the table and are into the bottom half following this poor run of form. Last season, home matches were a huge factor in helping the club make it to the Europa league places. This time around, the team has struggled even at the San Mames after managing just two wins in the last five competitive matches. More worryingly, these two victories were against Girona and Panathinaikos.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Iker Muniain (knee), Oscar De Marcos (ankle), Mikel Rico (ankle), and Iker Undabarrene (cruciate ligament) are the players unavailable for Athletic Bilbao coming into the game.
