Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Tottenham’s six-game winning sequence came to a crashing halt with a 4-2 loss against bitter rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Even though goals from Eric Dier and Harry Kane were able to cancel out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s early penalty, Arsenal came back with a vengeance in the second half. Unai Emery’s tactical change led to goals from Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Lucas Torreira. Southampton were able to register a 2-2 draw with Manchester United but manager Mark Hughes was unable to save his job even then. Stuart Armstrong and Cedric provided the Saints with an unlikely lead after just 20 minutes. Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera scored in the space of six minutes just before half-time to pull United back on level terms, but the Saints held on for a point.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Spurs have an opportunity to return back to winning ways rather immediately. The short turnaround time does put pressure on Spurs’ small squad, which has been tested to the extent with injuries and suspensions. Southampton will try to target Foyth, who is prone to having very bad days. The offence from Southampton will be able to put some pressure, but Spurs are favourites to get a victory at half-time and full-time – as they have done in 50% of the last six games.

Southampton have been able to display a reasonable confidence going forward when they are up against a Spurs team that will once again undergo a defensive reshuffle due to the absence of Jan Vertonghen. Tottenham have kept only two clean sheets in the last nine matches. I would back both teams to score due to the recent positivity shown by Saints.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Spurs lost the advantage provided by the impressive wins over Chelsea and Inter Milan with a defeat against fierce rivals Arsenal, but a lackadaisical performance was to be expected from Mauricio Pochettino’s team after their exertions in the two big victories. The club has to find a way back to winning ways quickly with games against Barcelona and Arsenal coming up in the next five matches. Pochettino may also think twice about experimenting with youngster Foyth, who has had an indifferent time at the back.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Vincent Janssen (foot), Victor Wanyama (knee), Kieran Trippier (groin), Moussa Dembele (ankle), and Davinson Sanchez (hamstring) are unavailable for Spurs due to injuries, while Jan Vertonghen is suspended after his red card against Arsenal.

Southampton Preview

Kelvin Davis has been appointed on an interim basis as the replacement for Mark Hughes. He has a relatively easy task to make a positive impression, as Southampton have come up with some improved performances in the last few games. After having struggled with scoring goals for much of the campaign, the Saints have been able to score two goals in back-to-back matches. Davis will look to build on this platform – even if it means that the club concede goals at the back.

Southampton Team News

Danny Ings (hamstring), Ryan Bertrand (back), Shane Long (ankle), Sam Gallagher (hamstring), and Michael Obafemi (hamstring) are unavailable due to injuries, while Mario Lemina is suspended for the game.
