Each team will feel they have a point to prove after defeats at the weekend. Both looked well-matched in their previous meeting and I can see this being a draw once again, though much will depend on the fitness of striker Harry Kane.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Spurs’ title hopes took a dent at the weekend after conceding late on at Old Trafford to lose 1-0 to Manchester United. In what was a predictably cagey affair, clear-cut chances were few and far between, with Dele Alli having the away side’s best opportunity but he was unable to convert inside the penalty area. With ten minutes go, Romelu Lukaku flicked on a long ball from David de Gea, which sent through Anthony Martial and the Frenchman coolly finished past Hugo Lloris. The result saw United remain second in the Premier League table, moving three points clear of Tottenham in doing so, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men now eight points behind leaders Manchester City. Having also let slip a two-goal lead against West Ham in the League Cup a week ago, Pochettino will be demanding a significant response from his side this Wednesday evening. Spurs last lost two games on the bounce in February and responded with nine wins and a draw from their next ten matches in all competitions, showing their ability to bounce back against adversity in doing so. Harry Kane missed out in both of those defeats and it remains unclear whether or not he will return for this glamour tie on Wednesday evening or not.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Victor Wanyama (knee), Erik Lamela (hip) and Harry Kane (hamstring) are all struggling with knocks and could miss out.

Real Madrid Preview

Things aren’t quite right at Real Madrid this season, with the team now finding themselves eight points adrift of Barcelona just ten games into this La Liga season following a stunning 2-1 defeat away to Girona at the weekend. Isco gave Zinedine Zidane’s men the lead inside the opening 12 minutes as they hoped to go on and secure what should’ve been a relatively routine victory. However, an incredible second-half fightback from the newly-promoted side saw arguably the shock result of the Spanish season so far, as goals from Christian Stuani and Portu helped Barcelona in their pursuit of the title. Following the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, Madrid were made clear favourites to win the title but now find themselves playing catch up early on this season. Part of the reason for their league struggles is a lack of production from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored just one La Liga goal in six appearances, though has had no such issues in the Champions League, already scoring five goals in three games. With five wins in their last six away European games, Madrid will be confident of their chances of getting three points here.

Real Madrid Team News

Keylor Navas, Mateo Kovacic (both groin) and Gareth Bale (calf) are all set to miss out for Madrid this Wednesday night.
