Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Tottenham Hotspur host Burnley at Wembley Stadium on 27/08/17 as both teams look to return to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend. Tottenham were beaten by title rivals Chelsea on Sunday, going down 2-1 at Wembley whereas Burnley fell to a 1-0 loss at home to West Brom. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Spurs may have the ‘Wembley curse’ hanging over their heads, but this is the perfect opportunity for the team to get a win under their belts in their temporary home. I’m expecting a Tottenham win here and for them to do so by keeping a clean sheet.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

The anticipation surrounding Tottenham’s first home league game turned became something of an anti-climax for the home supporters as Chelsea won the first Premier League game played at Wembley. Marcos Alonso’s superb free-kick gave the away side the lead, as Spurs struggled to break down a side who had clearly set up to frustrate them with three holding midfielders in N’Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and David Luiz. Michy Batshuayi headed in Christian Eriksen’s free-kick into his own net to drag Spurs level after Harry Kane hit the post in the first half, but Alonso scored on the break to seal a 2-1 victory for the visitors. Hugo Lloris will have been hugely disappointed with conceding in the fashion he did, with Alonso’s second of the game being hit virtually at him. Much of the narrative behind the potential prospect of Spurs’ season has circled around how they can contend with the temporary home switch and many doubts will have been silenced had they been able to beat Chelsea last time out. Tottenham won seventeen games at White Hart Lane last season, being the only team in the Premier League to maintain an unbeaten home record in the top flight last time around.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Erik Lamela (hip) continues his long-term absence through injury. Georges-Kevin N’Koudou (foot) is a doubt, while Danny Rose (knee) is also unlikely to feature despite returning to training.

Burnley Preview

If Burnley fans were still on cloud nine from their superb win away at Chelsea the weekend prior, last Saturday’s result at home to West Bromwich Albion will have undoubtedly brought them back down to earth. Sean Dyche named an unchanged side from the Chelsea game, but his players were unable to unsettle the Baggies in quite the same way as the defending champions, mustering just one shot on target in the entire contest despite boasting 64% possession. Their lack of efficiency in the final third was duly punished in the second half, as Hal Robson-Kanu scored the game’s only goal with a well-taken solo effort past Tom Heaton to take the three points back to the Midlands. Burnley stayed up last season virtually from their home form alone, but this particular result shouldn’t result in panic as the Clarets lost their first home game of last season - a 1-0 loss to Swansea. Andre Gray departed for £18m earlier this month and Dyche has moved swiftly to replace him in the shape of £15m Chris Wood, who scored 30 goals in all competitions for Leeds last season. He is set to be involved this weekend, as the team look to pull off their second significant scalp in London this season.

Burnley Team News

New signing Chris Wood is available for selection after completing his £15m move from Leeds this week. Dean Marney (cruciate ligament) is Burnley’s only injury absentee.
