Toronto FC vs Real Salt Lake Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Toronto’s poor start to the season continued with the team losing 1-0 to rivals Montreal Impact. Jeisson Vargas scored just before half-time with a strong hit that took a deflection off Nick Hagglund. Even though Toronto pushed for an equaliser late in the game, Montreal held on for the victory. Real Salt Lake picked up the first league win of the campaign by beating New York Red Bulls 1-0 at home. Albert Rusnak scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, but RSL were relatively comfortable throughout the match.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Toronto’s home run over RSL is quite mediocre with three wins in the last five meetings. Even though Toronto have lost both MLS matches with a 1-0 score, Greg Vanney’s team are more than capable of scoring and had enough chances in both these matches. Meanwhile, RSL are without a clean sheet this season, while the team has had a string of injuries. Hence, the away team may have a cautious approach and this is likely to extend the trend of low scoring matches – at the BMO Field – between the two teams. I would back under 2.5 goals – available at an attractive price.

Even though Toronto have a midweek match against America, manager Vanney is likely to field his full-strength team in the hope of ending the poor start to the season. However, RSL have performed quite well – apart from the collapse against Los Angeles FC – and the best pick of this game would be to back a draw.

Toronto FC Preview

Even though records show that defending MLS Cup champions Toronto have made a horrendous start to the season with back-to-back league defeats, manager Greg Vanney will be confident of getting his club back on track. Toronto have played well in both defeats and certainly deserved something from the game. Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco continue to remain as the key attacking threat for the club, but both players have to be more clinical in front of goal. A strong disadvantage for Toronto with regard to the MLS may be the distraction provided by the CONCACAF Champions League, as Toronto are set for back-to-back games against Mexican outfit America.

Toronto FC Team News

Justin Morrow (calf) is being monitored on a daily basis, while Chris Mavinga is doubtful with an abdominal injury.

Real Salt Lake Preview

Real Salt Lake were finally able to end the wait for a first win. Even though the victory over New York Red Bulls may not have been the most convincing around, RSL will be quite delighted to kick-start the campaign. Manager Mike Petke has to deal with a lengthy list of injuries even as early as in the fourth matchday of the campaign. Some crucial players are expected to be unavailable for the game against defending champions Toronto FC. It remains to be seen if RSL will be able to cope without players like Joao Plata, who have been key so far this season with two league goals.

Real Salt Lake Team News

Jordan Allen (knee), Taylor Peay (knee), Tony Beltran (knee), Shawn Barry (hamstring), Aaron Herrera (groin), Joao Plata (hamstring), and Marcelo Silva (hamstring) are missing from action for Real Salt Lake.
