Toronto FC vs New York Red Bulls Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Toronto will be looking to use the decisive 2-1 advantage over New York Red Bulls from the first leg to reach the MLS Cup Conference finals. Victor Vasquez scored the opening goal for Toronto after just eight minutes, but the Red Bulls were level just before half-time through a penalty from Daniel Royer. However, Sebastian Giovinco put the away team back in front with yet another goal for this campaign. Toronto now have a 2-1 aggregate advantage over New York Red Bulls. Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The games against Toronto and New York Red Bulls have been dominated by the former. The meetings in the 2017 MLS regular season witnessed Toronto winning the last two matches. Even though a draw is good enough for Greg Vanney’s team, home advantage coupled with the Red Bulls being rather mediocre on the road is likely to cause a home victory. There is a reasonable price available to back Toronto – despite the strong record. I would bet on a win for Toronto. Sebastien Giovinco is back on form after recently returning from an injury spell. He is the top scorer at Toronto with 17 goals and he has been able to score in his last two appearances. Giovinco’s pace and skill will once again cause opposition problems. I would go with Sebastian Giovinco to score anytime.

Toronto FC Preview

Toronto have displayed an amazing run of form so far in the last few months and it is not a surprise to see them being rated as a favourite for the MLS Cup 2017. Toronto have picked up the Supporters’ Shield already and have lost only twice in the last 27 games. The team has been overcoming opponents with ease, scoring an incredible 74 goals in 34 regular season matches. The results at home have been even better with the team getting 13 wins in 17 regular-season matches. Sebastian Giovinco has been the shining light of Toronto’s season with 17 goals in 26 league matches.

Toronto FC Team News

There are no injury or suspension issues for manager Greg Vanney coming into the game.

New York Red Bulls Preview

New York Red Bulls were left extremely disappointed to lose their home game against Toronto. This first leg match was perhaps the best opportunity for Jesse Marsch’s team to reach the finals. The Red Bulls are not the strongest team on the road and they have managed only two wins in the last nine away games. Furthermore, they would be making the trip to the BMO Field, which has been akin to a fortress for Toronto this season. Still, the tie is relatively well-balanced with the Red Bulls trailing Toronto by just one goal. The club have a significant dependence on Bradley Wright Phillips for the goals, as the striker has contributed 31% of the club’s goals this season. This increases to 41% in the away matches alone.

New York Red Bulls Team News

Mike Grella (knee), Salvatore Zizzo, and Aurelien Collin (heel) are the players unavailable for New York Red Bulls.
