Toronto FC vs Columbus Crew Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Toronto set up a tie against Tigres UANL in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League after a goalless draw with Colorado Rapids in the second leg. The 2-0 aggregate victory Greg Vanney’s team was achieved after a decent performance in the second leg. The likes of Sebastian Giovinco and Justin Morrow went close for Toronto, while Dominique Badji of Colorado came closest to scoring when he struck the woodwork just before half-time. Columbus Crew come into the game following a 2-0 win over Minnesota United in the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Columbus Crew have struggled a lot when it comes to games against Toronto after getting just one win in the last five meetings. This solitary victory came at home, but Columbus’ record at the BMO Field is not great either with only one win in six. Toronto’s home form was a key factor behind the club’s incredible success in the 2017 MLS campaign. The much-changed Columbus team is likely to struggle straightaway, and I would back a win at half-time and full-time for Toronto. Sebastian Giovinco appears to have picked up from where he left off last season, as the forward needed only 73 minutes in order to get off the mark this season. Giovinco scored in the first leg of the CCL against Colorado Rapids and had several opportunities in the second leg. I would back Sebastian Giovinco to score anytime.

Toronto win at half-time and full-time – 8/5

Toronto FC Preview

Toronto have picked up from where the team left of towards the end of the 2017 campaign, as a positive set of results in the Champions League places Greg Vanney’s team as the favourites to win the 2018 MLS title. Toronto are likely to benefit a lot from being able to retain most of the all-conquering squad of last season. For the time being, continental performances have been the focus for Toronto. Gregory van der Wiel has been the key addition for the club during the off-season, while Steven Beitashour is the significant departure after his free transfer to Los Angeles FC.

Toronto FC Team News

Gregory van der Wiel (personal), Chris Mavinga (abdominal injury), and Tosaint Ricketts (illness) are the names missing from action for Toronto.

Columbus Crew Preview

Gregg Berhalter is hoping to get his Columbus Crew team into the latter stages of the MLS play-offs after a semi-final defeat last season. A victory in the first match of the 2018 MLS campaign will avenge for the 1-0 semi-final loss last season. Columbus Crew have a huge rebuilding work to do, as players like Justin Meram, Ola Kamara, and Ethan Finlay will leave a huge gap in the team. During the off-season, Columbus Crew have brought in the likes of Pedro Santos and Gyasi Zardes, but it remains to be seen if the significant changes to the squad will have an impact. Ola Kamara’s departure is especially hard on Columbus Crew, as the forward came in with 34% of the club’s league goals last season.

Columbus Crew Team News

Mike Grella (knee) is the only injury worry for Gregg Berhalter, as Gaston Sauro is back in training following his cruciate ligament injury.
