Swansea City vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Swansea City take on Stoke City at the Liberty Stadium on 22/04/17 in a game the home team need to win to boost their hopes of survival. Swansea’s winless run in the Premier League continued last weekend, going down 1-0 away to Watford last time out. Stoke, alternatively, beat Hull 3-1 as they put to bed their own winless run. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Beting Tips and Predictions

Swansea are in desperate need of a victory this weekend after missing out on the chance to leapfrog Hull a week ago, after they fell too lost at the hands of Stoke. The Potters, though, have struggled away from home as of late and I’m expecting the home side to pick up a much-needed win here.

Swansea Preview

Swansea remain two points adrift of safety in the Premier League, that following another loss last time out, losing 1-0 away to Watford who sit 10th in the table. With Fernando Llorente returning to the starting XI, there was hope for Swansea that they would provide a much more potent threat to the Hornets, but such joy wasn’t forthcoming, and an individual error cost the Swans a point. Alfie Mawson lost possession to Etienne Capoue, who took two attempts to fire past Lukasz Fabianski after the Polish keeper denied the Capoue initially, but could only watch from the ground as he found the back of the net. With just one point from a possible eighteen in their last six matches, the Paul Clement effect has worn off of this team, who have scored just two goals during that period and have moved into the driving seat for taking the third relegation spot. They have played just twice at home in those six games, one of which was against high-flying Tottenham Hotspur and they had won three in a row at home before being held to a 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough and losing 3-1 to Spurs. Their final three home games are against Stoke, Everton and West Brom and they look as if they will require at least seven points from those fixtures to give themselves a real chance of escaping imminent danger.

Stoke Preview

Stoke’s five-match wait for a win was brought to an end against Hull City last weekend - doing opponents Swansea a favour in doing so - with a 3-1 victory at the Bet365 Stadium. Marko Arnautovic sent the Potters on their way, opening the scoring just six minutes into the game, but Harry Maguire struck six minutes into the second half to see the teams level. Stoke’s extra quality came through in the end, though, with first Jonathan Walters crossing for Peter Crouch to head the ball home. Then, Xherdan Shaqiri produced a magical strike with ten minutes remaining, firing in from 30 yards out past Eldin Jakupovic to end the Potters’ winless run. The victory came as a welcome relief to Mark Hughes, who will be hoping to guide Stoke to another top-half finish this season having done so to this point of his time at the Bet365 Stadium. Away from home, though, they have taken just a point from their last five trips on the road and haven’t scored during any of those games so far, last scoring during their only calendar away win of 2017 when they won 3-1 at Sunderland. Overall, Stoke have just three wins on the road all season, coming at Hull, Watford and Sunderland, so generally only seem to be able to perform away against sides in the bottom half.
