Swansea City vs Liverpool Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Swansea City face Liverpool at the Liberty Stadium on 22/01/18 as the away side look to build on an impressive victory last weekend. Swansea beat Wolves 2-1 in midweek, while Liverpool defeated Manchester City 4-3 at Anfield last weekend. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Swansea have had their troubles against the league’s elite teams this season, taking just one point from a possible 21 against the top-six so far. Liverpool meanwhile will be full of confidence after last weekend’s performance and I can see them taking three points here.

Swansea City Preview

Swansea City progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup in midweek after beating Championship high-flyers Wolves 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium. Jordan Ayew fired the Swans ahead after 11 minutes, though they were pegged back midway through the second half when substitute Diego Jota netted two minutes after being introduced from the bench. However, Wilfried Bony struck Swansea’s winner twenty minutes from time to seal their place in the next round, while also giving Carlos Carvalhal a support-boosting victory. Having won on his first outing as Swansea boss, Carvalhal followed it up with three games without a win, as he now looks to secure what would arguably be his biggest win as a manager in England. Last season’s survival charge was built on the foundations of strong home form, but Swansea have been unable to replicate that this season, winning just two of their 11 games at the Liberty Stadium, with their next two in south Wales coming against Liverpool and Arsenal. Leon Britton was in caretaker charge when Swansea here humbled with a 5-0 defeat at Anfield on Boxing Day, as Carvalhal now looks to find a way of halting this free-scoring Liverpool side.

Swansea City Team News

Angel Rangel (calf), Mike van der Hoorn, Renato Sanches (both hamstring) and Tammy Abraham (hip) are all doubts, while Kyle Naughton is suspended.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool have produced some stellar performances under Jurgen Klopp, but last weekend’s at Anfield may well top them all, as the Reds secured a superb 4-3 win over previously unbeaten Manchester City. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired the hosts ahead after eight minutes, but Leroy Sane equalised five minutes before half-time. Then, an outstanding ten-minute spell saw Liverpool sail into a 4-1 lead, as forwards Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all netted. Though Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan helped make it a nervy ending for the hosts, Klopp’s men held on to become the first Premier League side to defeat City this season. The performance proved not only how good you need to be to take down Pep Guardiola’s team, but also just how high of a level this Liverpool team is able to reach, even without Virgil van Dijk in the side. For 80 minutes they were dominant and overwhelming, helping them come into this game unbeaten in 18 matches in all competitions. Klopp confirmed Loris Karius is now the team’s first-choice ‘keeper going forward, having featured in each of their last two games and will be hoping to repay his manager’s faith in him.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) are both missing, but Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson could both return to the squad.
