Swansea City vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Boxing Day (15:00) fixture features two sides in the top half of the Championship table looking to push into the top six. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Swansea saw their two-game winless run come to an end with a 3-2 road loss at Hull last time out. Wilfried Bony and Bersant Celina both netted but it was not enough as the Tigers picked up a deserved three points.

Aston Villa are now three without a victory following a 3-2 home loss to Leeds in their last match. They were two up after 17 minutes thanks to a goal each from Tammy Abraham and Conor Hourihane but shipped three in the second-half to suffer defeat.

The reverse fixture came in mid-October at Villa Park and ended in a 1-0 win for the Midlanders. Tammy Abraham got the only goal of the game that day against a side he spent last season on loan at.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers are having a hard time splitting the too and make Aston Villa marginal favourites. Given the road side have beaten Derby and Middlesbrough on their travels in recent times I think they can do the same here.

The visitors have scored a first-half goal in the opening 45 minutes in five of their last eight on the road so I like them to net again here in the opening half.

Swansea City Preview

The Swans have made a reasonable start to life back in the Championship sitting 12th at the halfway stage six points and six places outside the play-offs. The expected goals data table feels they have been lucky so far and has them down in 19th.

At the Liberty, they have been decent winning five of 11, drawing two and losing four of them. They have lost two of their last three at their own place through those defeats came against West Brom and Norwich.

Swansea have a middle third record of 29 goals scored with eight of these having been netted by Oliver McBurnie. The 27 they have conceded means they have the joint-sixth best defence in the division.

Swansea City Team News

Courtney Baker-Richardson (ankle), Tom Carroll (hip), George Byers, (groin) and Jordi Govea (unknown) are doubts. Martin Olsson (Achilles) has been ruled out for the season.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa are 11th in the table but are starting to click under Dean Smith and it would not be a surprise to see them push into the top six as the season progresses.  The expected goals data feels already that should be as high as sixth.

Away from Villa Park, they have won just three of their 11 but four draws means they have lost just four times. They have taken seven points from their last three on the road and this includes wins at Boro and Derby and a draw at West Brom.

Only West Brom (50) have scored more goals than Aston Villa who have 45 for the league season. Their defence still needs work having shipped 37 times which is the fifth highest in the division.

Aston Villa Team News

Mile Jedinak (unknown), Jack Grealish (shin), Neil Taylor, Henri Lansbury (both hamstring),  Albert Adomah (ankle), Rushlan Hepburn-Murphy (knee) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are doubts.
