Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Easter Monday (15:00) fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland ran out shock 4-1 winners away to Derby on Good Friday that gave them a much needed three points.  The goals were shared around the team with one each for George Honeyman, Ashley Fletcher, John O’Shea and a penalty from Aiden McGeady.

Sheffield Wednesday also had a 4-1 victory last time as they defeated Preston to essentially secure their safety for another year.  Atdhe Nuhiu was the star of the show with a brace of goals while Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri grabbed one each.

The reverse fixture came in mid-August in Yorkshire and it ended in a 1-1 draw George Honeyman netting for the Black Cats and David Jone for the Owls.  It means the Wearsiders are now unbeaten in the last five head-to-heads between the duo.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday look a great bet here alongside the draw in the no bet market given they have beaten some reasonable Championship sides in Leeds and Preston in recent weeks. Sunderland did beat Derby 4-1 but I am not sure how much I want to read in that one result so the Owls are the bet for me.

Atdhe Nuhiu has bagged a brace in each of his last two appearances so backing him to score at any time looks value and I could not put you off a small interest in him to score two or more goals.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats put to an end a three-game losing run and ten without defeat as they beat Derby on the road.  They are off the bottom and are five away from safety with none of their next five against a top ten side.

At the Stadium of Light, they are without a victory in their last five losing four of these without netting a goal.  They have the third worst ranked home attack and the second worst ranked home defence.

Around 62% of the Championship goals that Sunderland have scored this season have come in the second-half with 26% in the final 15 minutes.  They have the second highest goals average per game in the division with 2.85 per fixture.

Sunderland Team News

Joel Asoro (head), Billy Jones (knee), Darron Gibson, (groin), Jonny Williams and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee), Robbin Ruitter (broken finger) and Tyias Browning (groin) are out for the season.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Seven points from their last three fixtures means that the Owls are now well above the relegation zone and should be playing Championship football next season.  They could be a team to watch between now and the end of the season as many play for their future while they also have numerous players coming back after lengthy injuries.

Away from Hillsborough, they have won just one of their last eight though that came last time on their travels at Leeds.  The 16 they have scored on the road is just the joint fourth lowest in the division.

Six of the last seven that Sheffield Wednesday have played in the league have gone over 2.5 goals with three of their last going over 3.5.  Atdhe Nuhiu is in good scoring form with four in his last two appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Ross Wallace (knee), Jordan Thorniley (concussion) and Joost van Aken (hip) are doubts while Kieran Westwood (groin) is close to a return.  Steven Fletcher (knee), Gary Hooper, Kieran Lee (both hip) and Sean Clare (ankle) are all long-term absentees.
