Sunderland vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game features two sides at different ends of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sunderland were easily beaten in their last game before the international break going down 3-0 at Barnsley. The scoreline might not have been a fair reflection as the Black Cats saw more of the ball and only just trailed in the expected goals data. Sheffield United continued their good start to the season with a 3-1 home victory over Derby County. Billy Sharp grabbed a brace and Jonny Russell got a goal but the shot data suggests the Blades got lucky with almost every shot they took going in. It has been a while since these sides last met so it is hard to gain too much information from their head-to-heads though the last five meetings have produced a combined total of just six goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The match prices look about right here as Sunderland are deserved favourites but I would not be rushing to back them currently as Simon Grayson needs time to get his ideas across to the players. No clean sheets for the season suggest that Sheffield United can score here and with four for the season Billy Sharp looks the man to be with in the anytime goalscorer market. I think the home side are also capable of finding the back of the net so take a play on both teams to score.

Sunderland Preview

It has been a slow start to the season for Sunderland who took four points from their first two games but in the last three have taken just the one. Three of their next four are at the Stadium of Light and they will hope to use this to get some points on the board. A lack of goals has been an issue with five for the league season but three of these all came in the one game against Norwich. At the other end, they are also having a few issues with eight shipped and no clean sheets. It was a decent deadline day for Sunderland who saw high earners Papy Djilobodji and Wahbi Khazri depart while bringing in a trio of solid performers at this level in Jonny Williams, Callum McManaman and Marc Wilson.

Sunderland Team News

Aiden McGeady (hamstring) and Brendon Galloway (ankle) are listed day-to-day while Josh Maja (knee), Duncan Watmore and Patrick McNair (both cruciate) are all missing.

Sheffield United Preview

It has been a good start for Sheffield United since their return to the Championship as they have three wins and two defeats from their first five games. These defeats have come on the road and three of their next four are away from Bramall Lane. The Blades have scored five times in the league this season with four of these being netted by Billy Sharp. At the other end, they have only shipped four but it is three in two from ties on the road. Ahead of the transfer window, Sheffield United made a couple of sensible signings bringing in Clayton Donaldson from Birmingham who should help Billy Sharp up front and adding Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan.

Sheffield United Team News

New signing Clayton Donaldson (groin)is listed day-to-day while James Hanson (hamstring) and Samir Carruthers (unknown) are doubts. Leon Clarke (suspension), Simon Moore (knee) and Richard Stearman (hamstring) are all ruled out.
