Sunderland vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is a battle between two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland picked up their first win in the league since August 13th last weekend as they defeated Burton 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium. James Vaughan gave them the lead six minutes from time and then a George Honeyman goal wrapped up a crucial three points. Reading also picked up a useful three points last time out as they put on a strong showing to defeat Barnsley 3-0 on Tuesday night. The goals were shared around the team with one each for David Edwards, Joey van den Berg and Jan Dadhi Bodvarsson. The last time these sides was in the 2012/13 Premier League season so it is hard to read too much into the head-to-head record. For what it is worth the home side has won eight of the last ten meetings between the duo.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Judging the value in this game depends on your views of the Sunderland victory over Burton. Is this a starting point and with confidence high the Black Cats can go on and claim the home victory or is it a case of beating the weakest team in the league and their familiar Stadium of Light failings will return to haunt them against an in-form Royals. The answer is not easy to find and as such this is a game I will look elsewhere to find the value in. Perhaps that value comes in the player markets where I like a last goalscorer play on Joel Asoro. The 18-year-old came off the bench in both games for Chris Coleman and carries a real threat going forward with his pace and looks worth a little interest here. Over 2.5 goals is the outsider but I quite like the look of it as it would have paid in four of the last five at this ground and in four of the last six at any ground for Reading.

Sunderland Preview

Chris Coleman must look to build on the positive result last weekend though you must go back to November 2016 for the last time they won back-to-back league games. Four of the next six they play are against teams in the top-half including two of the top three so they need to pick up points here. At the Stadium of Light, they are seeking that first league victory in 2017 and they have just three games to do it in. Each of their last five at their own ground have seen both teams score with three of these ending all-square. Six of their last eight goals have come in the second-half with four of these coming in the final 20 minutes. Six of the last eight they have conceded have come in the first-half and four of these have come in the first 20 minutes.

Sunderland Team News

Marc Wilson (calf), Jonny Williams (Shoulder), Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone, Josh Maja (all knee) are doubts. Duncan Watmore (cruciate) has been ruled out for the season.

Reading Preview

It is now three undefeated for the Royals and just one defeat in their last six which has allowed to climb up to 16th. Eight of their next 11 including this one are against teams in the bottom-half of the division. Away from the Madejski Stadium, it has been a mixed bag of late with two victories, two draws and two defeats from their last six. Five of their last six on the road have seen both teams score while the last two have seen both net more than once. Five of their last eight fixtures have gone over 2.5 goals and of the three remaining two produced two goals while one ended goalless. Just one of the last eight for Reading have been level going into the half-time break.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, John Swift, Tennai Watson (all hamstring), George Evans (thigh), Sam Smith, Stephen Quinn, Joe Mendes (all knee) and Gareth McCleary (groin) are doubts. Jordan Obita (cruciate) is out for the season.
