Sunderland vs Preston North End Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides at opposite ends of the Championship table in need of points.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland extended their winless run to nine last weekend as they went down 1-0 at Loftus Road to QPR.  The Black Cats were in the game at 0-0 until keeper Jason Steele was sent-off in the 49th minute and the ten men could not hold out for a point.

Preston lost for the second time in their last four as they went down 2-1 at home to in-form side Fulham.  Sean Maguire levelled up in the 76th minute and they seemed headed for a point until Aleksandar Mitrovic stepped up in the 91st minute to deny them a point.

The reverse fixture came at the end of September at Deepdale in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw.  Josh Harrop and Jordan Hugill netted for North-End while George Honeyman and Aiden McGeady got the goals for the North-Eastern outfit.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sunderland are woeful so Preston might be a popular bet especially considering they are unbeaten in ten on the road though their tendency to draw too many puts me off backing them.

63% of the goals Sunderland have scored this season have come in the second-half while this applies to 67% of the goals for Preston so taking the second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes makes sense especially as both teams need to win the game.  In addition, try a little play on over 1.5 second-half goals for the reasons listed before.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats have taken just three points from their last nine and although they are not cut off you would struggle to see where they will get the points from to stay up.  Four of their next five are against teams in the top 14 while their last two this season are against Wolves and Fulham.

At the Stadium of Light, they are four without a victory failing to find the back of the net in three of these.  Each of the last four visitors to their ground have scored at least two goals with in total ten conceded in the last four.

Around 63% of the league goals Sunderland have scored this season have come in the second-half.  On just two occasions have the Wearsiders gone in ahead at half-time at their own ground.

Sunderland Team News

Jake Clarke-Salter is available after his suspension while Jason Steele starts his.  Marc Wilson, Darron Gibson, Patrick McNair (all groin), Jonny Williams and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee), Robbin Ruitter (broken finger) and Tyias Browning (groin) are out for the season.

Preston North End Preview

Just two victories from their last seven has put a dent in the play-off hopes of the Lilywhites who are losing ground on the top six.  They still have hope though as just one of their next seven comes against a team in the top ten.

Away from Deepdale, they are unbeaten in ten now though five of these have ended in draws.  North-End have the joint second best road defence in the Championship though just five of their 12 clean sheets have come on their travels.

Ten of the last 12 that Preston have played in the league have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Sean Maguire has netted four times in his last three appearances despite starting just one of these games.

Preston North End Team News

North-End have no injuries or suspensions ahead of this game.
