Sunderland vs Millwall Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15.00) game sees two sides in the bottom six of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland continued their recent miserable form as they went down 1-0 to Middlesbrough in their last fixture before the international break. The Black Cats can consider themselves unlucky as they matched their North-Eastern rivals on the expected goals data but still came away without a point. Millwall also suffered defeat last time out going down 1-0 to Burton at the Den. The Lions were also unlucky when looking at the expected goals data which suggests it was them and not the Brewers who were the most likely scorers. These two sides have not met since the 2004 season so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-head record. For what it is worth the London side have won three of their last four against the Wearsiders.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to bring yourself down on either side of the match markets as you have a home team without a win at their own ground in 2017 and an away team without a success in eight on the road this season. It is best to swerve these match markets and look elsewhere for your bets. Over 2.5 goals is the outsider of two here but I think this looks the most likely result considering that this has happened in each of the last two and three of the last four at the Stadium of Light. Both these teams score around 60% of their goals in the second-half so take an interest in the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring.

Sunderland Preview

At the time of writing Sunderland still had not pointed a manager to replace Simon Grayson which suggests they did not have a plan in place when sacking their former boss. It is now 14 games without a league victory and they sit bottom of the table with just ten points. At the Stadium of Light, their form has been terrible and from 19 matches in 2017 in all competitions they have still yet to win one. Both teams scoring has happened in each of their last four in front of their own fans. The 31 goals they have conceded makes them tied with Burton for the worst defensive record in the division. Going forward they have been decent with a respectable 20 goals led by Lewis Grabban who has eight.

Sunderland Team News

Josh Maja and Duncan Watmore (both knee) are doubts as are Billy Jones (unknown), Didier Ndong (knee) and James Vaughan (unknown). Lamine Kone (knee) and Tyias Browning (hamstring) are long-term absentees.

Millwall Preview

The Lions would have welcomed the international break as they have lost their last two and taken just four points from their last six games. They sit in 19th place and look set for a season battling against relegation back to League One. Away from the Den, they are without a win drawing four and losing four with just one point taken from their last three on the road. A lack of goals has been an issue with just one netted from their last four on their travels. The 17 goals they have conceded is the seventh best in the division which is impressive. The attack has been the main problem though as they have netted the fourth lowest total in the league and their top scorer is George Savile with four.
