Sunderland vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two North-Eastern rivals in action with both sides needing points for different reasons. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland lost 1-0 at Bolton last time out to make it their fourth defeat in their last five with things looking bleak. The Black Cats created more scoring chances but manager Chris Coleman was once more left to voice his frustration with the situation. Middlesbrough looked good in defeating Hull 3-1 at the Riverside on Tuesday night with Rudy Gestede in great form. He grabbed two goals and Patrick Bamford the other as Boro kept up their promotion push. These two sides have already met twice this season once in the league and once in the FA Cup. Both came at the Riverside and both were won by Boro 2-0 in the FA Cup and 1-0 in the league.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given they have beaten them twice already this season and how poor Sunderland have been recently I like the look of Middlesbrough to win the game. In addition, try a play on Adama Traore to get among the goals as he was excellent in midweek and he should cut open a Black Cats defence that has shipped 15 times in their last seven.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats are in poor form with seven defeats, one draw and just one victory from their last nine league games. Four of their next six opponents are teams in the top-half and things look bad for the Wearsiders. At the Stadium of Light, they have lost their last two and have taken just 11 of their 26 points in front of their own fans. Only Burton (33) have conceded more home goals than the 24 they have conceded. A lack of goals has been an issue for Sunderland who managed to net just six times in their last ten in the league. Things are so bad that George Honeyman is their third top scorer this season and he has netted just three times.

Sunderland Team News

Marc Wilson, Darron Gibson (both groin) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee) and Robin Ruitter (broken finger) are out for the season

Middlesbrough Preview

It has been a mixed bag for the Teesiders lately with four victories, one draw and four defeats from their last nine. They sit just outside the play-off places and face just two top ten sides in their next eight. Away from the Riverside Stadium, they have lost their last two 1-0 though before that won three straight. They have won four, drawn one and lost just they have played on the road to the bottom ten. Each of the last four and five of the last six Middlesbrough league games have seen at least one goal netted in the first-half. 18 of the 33 they have played have gone under 2.5 goals with an average of 2.24 per fixture.

Middlesbrough Team News

Ben Gibson (illness) and Fabio (thigh) are doubts
