Sunderland vs Fulham Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon game (15:00) features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sunderland picked up an important point at the weekend as they held league leaders Wolves at Molineux. The Black Cats created next to nothing in terms of scoring chances but restricted their opponents to only a few opportunities to claim a point. Fulham picked up all three points as they defeated Birmingham 1-0 at Craven Cottage in their last game. The home side were the better team though were grateful for an early and decisive goal from Sheyi Ojo. The last meetings between these sides came in the 2015 FA Cup with a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light followed by a 3-1 Sunderland victory at Craven Cottage. Head-to-head meetings between these sides tend to produce goals with five of the last seven going over 2.5.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the horrible nature of the home form for Sunderland, I can see the visitors being a popular bet but a loss at Burton suggests they cannot entirely be trusted while confidence for the hosts should be high after claiming a point against the side at the top of the table. Given the hosts have scored around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half and the visitors around 55% then backing the second-half to be the highest scoring looks the sensible play. In addition, given the home team played about 30 minutes against Wolves with ten men they could tire so take the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half for the London outfit.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats are in relative good form for the season they have had with four points from their last three fixtures. This is one of two home games they have left as they look to secure an elusive first win at their own ground in 2017. At the Stadium of Light, they remain without a win though they have lost just two of their last five. Both teams to score is a feature of these games and has happened in each of their last six in front of their own fans. Six of the last nine Sunderland have played have gone over 2.5 goals with four of these going over 3.5. The last three they have played have been goalless at half-time while nine of their last nine scored in their ties have come in the second-half.

Sunderland Team News

Lee Cattermole will miss the game through suspension but Callum McManaman is available. Jonny Williams (Shoulder), Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone (both knee), Billy Jones (foot), Bryan Oviedo (hamstring) and Patrick McNair (groin) are all doubts.  Duncan Watmore (cruciate) has been ruled out for the season.

Fulham Preview

The Cottagers come into this game in good form with three victories from their last four and just one defeat in five. Three of their next four fixtures are against teams in the bottom eight. Away from Craven Cottage, they have lost three of their last four though they have played three of the top six and in-form Brentford. Goals has been a feature of their travels with six of the last seven going over 2.5 goals and three over 3.5. Around 55% of the goals they have scored in the league this season have come in the second-half with 44% in the last 30 minutes. Fulham have been behind just four times at half-time this season and this goes down to just one when looking at away ties.

Fulham Team News

Lucas Piazon (broken leg) and Floyd Ayite (hamstring) are doubts.
